GOLD AND DIAMOND DISCOVERY....HISTORY. THE GOLD AND DIAMOND RUSH OF THE 1880S. Note then S.A. was still unerdeveloped and the likes of Joburg were minin villages. This is where the money that built UCT, Wits,Rhodes etc..came from as OP quoted from his HISTORY ARCHIVE. The likes of Scholes are nigerian ILLITERATES who are wondering around S.A. I noticed nigerian okes between age 45 and 60 yrs in S.A are ill informed esp. Igbo yahoo boys. Note: there were NO MODERN MACHINES the blackman of S.A. dugg that gold and diamonds so that we can build our state of art universities. Same can be said on ROADS AND BUILDINGS.

Re: Top 50 Universities In Africa 2015 - Latest Ranking by khameni7: 1:08pm On Jul 29, 2015
Funny Enough Scholes chose not to bitch about these university below and many other east, west, southern and north african universities that have colonial past. Like most Igbos he chose to hate S.A. LISTENING TO EMPTY VESSELS LIKE SCHOLES AND HIS TRIBE U CAN SWEAR THAT "COLONIZATION NEVER TOOK PLACE IN AFRICA". They dumb fuvcks by birth, hence theyr called FLAT HEADS in their own country and hated for FALSE CLAIMS. From what I know theres NO IGBO UNIVERSITY IN AFRICA'S TOP 50. Bu they still come here to spew crap.

By now we know ya'll never liked us and we hate u too.

24. University of Ghana – Ghana

The University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of the thirteen Ghanaian universities and tertiary institutions. It was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, and was originally an affiliate college of the University of London, which supervised its academic programmes and awarded degrees. It gained full university status in 1961, and now has nearly 40,000 students.

21. Makerere University Kampala – Uganda

Makerere University Kampala is Uganda’s largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922, and is now part of Uganda Christian University. In 1963, it became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to general degrees from the University of London.

6. THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO – Egypt

The American University in Cairo was established by Americans who were devoted to education and service in the Middle East in 1919 with a motive to create an English-language based university that will uphold very high standards of learning, conduct and scholarship and to ultimately contribute to the intellectual growth, discipline, and character of the future leaders of Egypt and the region. The founding president, Dr. Charles A. Watson helped shape the institution for the first 27 years.

Initially The American University in Cairo (AUC) was intended to be both a preparatory school and a university. With a population of 142 students in two classes that were equivalent to the last two years of an American high school, the preparatory school was opened in 1920 and awarded Junior college-level certificates to 20 students in 1923 as her first diploma certificate.

Mall of Africa: A new shopping experience

The mammoth Mall of Africa, due to open for business in April next year, will be the crowning glory of South Africa’s strong shopping centre industry. The country already ranks in the global top 10 in terms of highest number of shopping centres as well as total floor space.

According to research from Urban Studies, which conducts feasibility studies for shopping centres, South Africa has the highest number of shopping centres in the world after the United States, Japan, China, Canada and the United Kingdom. South Africa ranks sixth in the world when it comes to number of shopping centres, with over 2 000 shopping centres. When it comes to floor space South Africa ranks 7th highest globally, with 23-million square metres. wink wink wink wink

Largest in Africa
Valued at R5-billion, the 131 000m² Mall of Africa project will be the largest shopping mall ever built in South Africa in a single phase. The so-called “super-regional” mall will be the heart of the Waterfall City development, located in Midrand between South Africa’s administrative capital, Pretoria, and its economic capital, Johannesburg.

The growth in shopping centres has surged upward since 1994 when the first democratic elections took place in South Africa.

According to a June 2015 publication from Urban Studies, there were close to 40-million people in South Africa at that time. About 76% had a household income of less than R2 500 per month and a Living Standards Measure (LSM) level of 1 to 4 represented more than 80% of the market. Urbanisation was 54%. There were only 36 shopping centres larger than 30 000m². Total shopping centre floor area was little more than four-million square metres.

Since then, the population has grown to 55-million and 64% of the population is urbanised. The LSM 1 - 4 now accounts for 22% of all households and higher LSMs of 8 to 10 have grown from 17% to 25% (which represents 1.6-million more households in these categories). Metros house 66% of the total mall space in South Africa. The shopping centre industry has more than 600 000 permanent jobs, and another 500 000 jobs are indirectly involved with the industry.

The growth in expenditure from black households is a substantial driver supporting growth of shopping centres.

“The spending by black households as a percentage of the total spend increased from 35% in 1993/4 to 57% in 2013/14,” the Urban Studies publication said. “The fact that the total expenditure cake for the total population is increasing, is one of the main features of shopping centre development in South Africa.”

A study from the University of Cape Town’s Unilever Institute of Strategic Marketing found South Africa’s black middle class increased from 1.7-million people in 2004 to 4.2-million in 2012 and its spending power was estimated at R400-billion a year. In 2013 black middle class was over 5,4 million and by 2014 they mae about 10,4 million people and spent over R600 billion/$60 billion.

Talking on The Complimentary Breakfast on Jacaranda FM, Knott-Craig says his first reason would be economic fundamentals.
“If you just look at the resources we have in the ground, there’s something like $5 trillion of resources sitting under the ground, waiting for opportunity,” Knott-Craig says. “And if you take into account that it was the gold that made South Africa, and that was only $1.5 trillion over a hundred years, we’ve still got a lot of runway”

1. UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

Established 1st October 1829, optimism is the official creed of this university, which has the motto “Spes Bona” (“Good Hope”). The University of Cape Town has consistently ranked at the top of best universities in Africa. The University of Cape Town started off as a College with a small tertiary-education facility that grew substantially after 1880, when the discovery of gold and diamonds in the north – and the resulting demand for skills in mining – gave it the financial boost it needed to grow. The College developed into a fully fledged university during the period 1880 to 1900.
