DRESSING FOR A JOB INTERVIEW:

How relevant or important is proper dressing for a job interview? Although the final selection of a job candidate is rarely determined by dress, but first round candidates are often eliminated because they have dressed inappropriately.

This is not to say you should invest in new wardrobe; just be sure that you are able to put together an adequate interview outfit.

However, every interview & interviewer is different, because of this, it is not possible to set down rigid guidelines for exactly how you will look or dress in each situation.

There is however, relevant, broadly based counsel that will help you make the right decision for your interview.

Below are some guidelines for you to consider when dressing for an interview:

1. Dress in harmony with the way that those interviewing you are likely to dress.

2. Use outfits of good quality that you know look good on you.

3. Do not wear something so flashing that will bring too much attention to your clothes rather than you.

4. If the interview takes place over more than a day, wear a different outfit eachday.

5. Do not wear anything that connects you with a religious group, political cause, association, school, or club.

6. Do not wear sunglasses.

7. Do use breath mints and deodorant, make sure you maintain high body hygiene.

8. Don't use heavy perfume. The safest is something subtle or none at all.

9. Use folder or case for your credentials, if you carry a briefcase, make sure it is of good quality and small in size.

10. Women should not wear low-cut blouses or clothes that appears "sexy".

Apart from your outlooks self confidence is also very important, be confident of yourself.

The key to success is that the interviewer must like you! This means he should find you comfortable to be with and that you meet the basic requirement for the job.

How do you accomplish these ends? You start by making a good initial impression. Here are some ways:

1. Walk slowly, steadily and tall on entering the room.

2. Make sure you knock at the door and get a reply before opening the door.

3. Make sure you don't turn your back on your interviewer when trying to shut the door.

6. Greet your interviewer with eye contact and a relaxed smile, look into the interviewer's eyes as you greet, not the floor or any where else.

5. Be ready to shake hands, but let the interviewer take the lead. If the interviewer does not extend a hand, don't initiate the handshake.

6. The handshake should signal friendliness. Match the pressure extended by the interviewer, never exceed it. Do not grap the hand with the "iron-man bone crusher grip". Use only one hand, shake vertically, do not extend your hand parallel to the floor, smile and lean forward very slightly as you shake. Do not snap the interviewer's finger after the handshake.

7. Do not sit until you are offered one. It is polite to wait until the interviewer offers you a seat.

But if you feel uncomfortable doing this, gently ask the interviewer to take the initiative; "where would you like me to sit"?

8. There is only one way to sit during an interview, "bottom well placed on the chair" and "back straight". Keep your hands on the arms of the chair, if there are no arms on the chair, keep your hands on your lap or on your pad of papers. It is advisable not to cross your legs exposing the sole of your shoe or worst of all cross your arms across your chest. Do not rest your arms on the table either.

9. Keep your head up and maintain eye contact at a good proportion especially when the interviewer begins to speak and when you reply.

10. Avoid folding your arms, smile naturally whenever the opportunity arises. Remember to show one or both of your palms as you make points. Do not overuse this gesture.

11. Remember to avert your gaze from time to time so as to avoid the impression that you are staring. When you do so look confidently to the right, to the left, but don't look down.

12. Always give your opinion on any question ask. e.g
(QUESTION) "What was your last salary"?
(RESPONSE) "My last salary was exactly within the range that I now seek, which is between __________ and __________ (mention a range).

Good Luck!!!
