Government Should Enforce Age Restriction On Sportsbet by Wittylens(m): 6:43am On Apr 26, 2015
"Sportsbet" Is now rampant in Nigeria. millions of Naira are traded and lost everyday. I'm not saying it is bad to play (its a matter of choice) , however , I believe its getting out of hand and nobody is monitoring the business.

in the past few months I've noticed that underaged children now play Sports bet . in the area where I live children as young as 10 - 16 now engage in Sportsbet without the knowledge of their parents.

In the rules it is stated clearly that only 18+ can play , however , some betting kiosks still allow this young children to play. imagine , at Jss 2,, a student has already started gambling. he will be a core gambler before he even reaches ss3.

I want to use this medium to call on the federal government (or whoever is in charge) to monitor the activities of this Bookies so that the future of our young ones will not be destroyed. Once addicted , Gambling is very hard to stop.

You're absolutely right, kids have no business with gambling (although I did when I was a kid).

I think its the lottery commission that regulates gambling in Nigeria. You should complain to them.

shocked shocked shocked shocked Not up to 12years old?!!!! Thats so so wrong! Where are his parents? Parents have just left parenting to government and the effect is overwhelming! The one that pains me is the women (married and single) who do this sports betting. I marvel at them and I wonder if it's exposure or development or just stupidity

Your point is very valid but how do we enforce age control when the government has not fulfilled its social responsibility of issuing everyone a social security number and ID card that should be required by any organization like the sports betting systems and other organizations like banks? In any case, though, the motion should be filed, it's irresponsible for underage people to be engaged in sports betting. It's really so unfortunate that leaders who call themselves elder statesmen over the years abandoned their responsibilities, expecting the country to be moving forward without control systems

The sports betting problem is just a tip of the iceberg. The main problem is our value system, we have a warped value system that emphasizes making it at all cost no matter how. This value system is promoted by parents, the communities, the churches and the society at large. A teenage is without ant visible means of livelyhood engages in Yahoo yahoo and buys new cars for his father, the father is proud of him and celebrates him. He pays tithes and his pastor uses him as an example of whom God as blessed. And his community afford him much respect. So even a 12yr is trying to make it.

Is it only sports betting? What about the telecoms companies who play their own lottery by asking people win millions of naira for N100 per text, or those that says predict the correct scores for N100. They do not bother with age restrictions.

Then there is our TV program and films, there is no strict age classification and restriction. You will see programs on local TV promoting sex, crime and all manner of vices being shown in the afternoon (sometimes in the morning), without caring for the minors.
