SCORES of supporters of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State stormed the party’s secretariat in the Port Harcourt on Wednesday protesting an alleged imposition of candidates on the people ahead of the May 23, 2015 council elections.

The protesters, who were mostly from Obio/Akpor and Ahoada West Local Government Areas, claimed that some top members of the APC in the state were not interested in holding primaries.

Displaying placards and chanting war songs, the protesters blocked the main gate into the state party secretariat located along Forces Avenue.

Some of the placards read, ‘Primary election must hold in Ahoada West,’ ‘Obio/Akpor says no to adoption of candidate,’ ‘Ahoada West election materials were hijacked,’ ‘There was no primary election in Obio/Akpor,’ and ‘Do not impose any candidate on us.’

Security operatives, however, had a hectic time while trying to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order at the state party secretariat.

One of the protesters from Ahoada West, who simply identified himself as Phillip, lamented that those that were being imposed on them were not popular, adding that democracy would be rubbished should candidates emerge at the grassroots without the conduct of primaries for the council elections.

Philip told our correspondent that they were at the state APC to protest the foisting of candidates on the people, adding that the protest would continue until the party did the right thing.

“The people of Ahoada West want primaries to hold so that a credible candidate for the council election in the area will emerge. But that is not what we have seen.

“Instead of holding peaceful primaries, election materials were hijacked and we are not happy about this development. The APC in the state must do the right thing,” Phillip said.

The State APC Chairman, Dr. Davies Ikanya, was seen outside the premises of the secretariat trying to placate the protesting supporters.

Ikanya, who reacted to the protest, said it was normal for people to show their grievance after an election.

He, however, promised that the APC would look into the protesters’ grievances and punish whoever was found to have breached the rules of the party.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday called on lawmakers-elect of the Edo State House of Assembly not to fail to deliver on their campaign promises when they are inaugurated later in June.
