Why Has Corruption Gotten Worse In Spite Of All The Promises To Stop It In Nigeria?

Corruption is very serious crime which not only devastates the quality of life of citizens of a country, but it completely destroys trust and confidence in government public officials, destroys the image of a country to the rest of the world. Once there is a breakdown in trust between the citizens or the people and those entrusted to manage the resources, maintain good governance and protect the country, it results to a breakdown in the rule of law. And as a consequence all sectors of the country's economy is affected and progress comes to a halt. A historical review of the events in Nigeria following her independence, shows that this is the problem which Nigeria faces, which no administration has been able to correct. But the problem of corruption can be corrected, if certain unusual steps and actions are taken. See ideas below.

1. The most important step in solving any problem, is that you must acknowledge that you have a problem, then identify the problem, and devise an effective plan or strategy for resolving the problem. The great citizens of Nigeria have clearly acknowledged that the country has a horrible problem. They have also identified this detrimental problem as "corruption." They part that everyone is missing, is the lack of an effective strategy for resolving the corruption epidemic.
2. What is corruption? It is defined as: dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.
3. What is bribery? Bribery according to Black's Law Dictionary, constitutes a crime and is defined as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of items of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty.
4. What is the root cause of corruption? (2). A lack of respect for the rule of law by those in positions of power and authority. (2). Engaging in corruption is profitable and the punishment is not devastating enough to stop more people from doing it.
5. What then can be done to destroy this problem? Let anyone who is caught involved in corrupt practices, feel the full force and wrath of fire, a hammer, and a hurricane coming down upon them, with no place to run and hide and to be publicly humiliated, imprisoned for a long time, and all assets acquired through their corrupt practices confiscated or seized.
6. History has shown that new military or civilian administrations threatening to end corruption does not work.
7. History has shown that trial people and sending them to prison for a few years does not deter corruption.
8. History has shown that mere threats to take actions without actually doing something drastic does not stop corruption.
9. History has shown that a government cannot effectively deter corruption when the people surfer in poverty without relief, hope and no help whatsoever to lift them out of poverty.
10. History has shown that in countries where people go into politics as a career and vehicle for personal enrichment, rather because of a passion for serving the people, and to improve the lives of the people, corruption thrives and has gone out of control. Nigeria is not the only corrupt country in the world, do some research and compare the conditions in the other corrupt countries to Nigeria, to see it for yourself.
11. Effective strategies that will defeat and eliminate the corruption problem in Nigeria. Please see below.
12. Get the brightest minds and educators in Nigeria to design an educational subject or curriculum called "How Corruption Robbed Every Nigerian Citizen And How To Stop It." This is just a suggestion, a shorter title may be used to reflect the main message. This subject should be a required basic course material from primary to university level. Every government institution from local to national levels, including all politicians at every level, the president, military, police, private and public sector or everyone, must be introduced to this material in the form of a "Seminar or Workshop," after which attendees must be awarded a certificate of completion. In fact, a national law should be in place to back up or give it teeth to bite you in the wallet, if you refuse to attend or complete this required seminar.
13. The problem of corruption has become an unintentional tolerated culture after decades of allowing it to continue without any effective solutions. The fight against corruption in Nigeria will not happen overnight because it has been going on for decades. It will require a total mindset overhaul for each and every Nigerian citizen. This will be accomplished through the education of the people and through effective public service announcements in newspapers, radio, and television commercials locally and nationwide, to show the people the proof of the devastating results of the corrupt actions and why everyone must work together to end it.
14. Specific new stronger laws should be introduced and passed by local, state legislatures, by the senate and house of representatives at the national level.
15. All those who are tried and convicted of corruption, should not only go to prison for 20 or more years, but they should be humiliated by listing their names, photo and offense, in a National Corruption Convicts Register. This register should be made available online, so that any Nigerian citizen can review the status of people in positions of power and authority. And anyone that has been convicted of corruption must be banned from doing business with all government entities, local, state, and the federal government for life.
16. Where all else has failed, this is an idea for your review and comments, pro or con, and you may come up with your own idea and share too, because you never know, your idea may end up being the solution, that Nigeria was waiting for to free her from corruption finally. Please share this post to your family and friends both at home and in the diaspora. Thank you for your time.
