Funny thing is, he listens and obeys his commands when we're indoors. But as soon as we're outside, he throws caution to the wind and becomes his own boss and would never listen to anybody.

I've tried reading up on obedience training and also watched a few videos from oyinbos, but I'm looking for a more practical advice from Nigerians. Some people suggested discipline by flogging him into submission - I totally don't buy that as he might just become fearful of me and probably resent me forever.

Please share what has worked for you.

Your dogs environmental stability is quite faulty...

Environmental stability should be first taught before basic obedience, but as I can see you taught basic obedience first.

Positive approach is your safest bet now (it always works though), then get it used to random noises and situations, (create those simulations in-doors too if possible).

I think my dog thinks he's the pack leader. I don't know why he feels that way.

I had a verbal fight with an middle aged man who was trying to enter my street yesterday, and my dog charged at him. The dog was clearly under a leash. But rather than speak politely, he shouted rudely at me to hold my dog. I didn't like that, and we began exchanging words. My dog wasn't happy that this man was raising his voice at me, and began barking at him excessively.

From my observation, I think he thinks I'm unable to protect myself from people he feels are a threat. And the unfortunate thing is that he doesn't listen when I tell him to cool down. I'm looking to fix this, and the first thing I've done is bring him inside to live with me, and I've sensed he feels happier now. I let a lot of things slide before, but I intend to become more strict with the rules.

Dog behaves well at home and messes up outside and you think it is environmentally stable. The dog isn't messing up because it is violent, that dog knows that the house is it's territory not the street, the dog is actually tensed at the noise and irregularity of the outside world. I only suggested a simulation of such at home too.... Period!

I have come to understand some of dogs' language after being an owner of five different dogs over many years and the only way I know to stop a dog's bad habit is to spank it just when it misbehaves. Try to let it know that u are flogging it for that bad habit. If u repeat the flogging a number of times over the same issue it will get the gist u don't like what it is doing.

Funnily, dogs aren't like humans, they can remember but they forgive easily. So don't be afraid of any resentment whatsoever. Just make sure u treat it well and don't over spank. Two to three good slaps on the side of its lap is okay

Imagine your dog grows into an adult and you are still unable to control it, imagine it breaks out of its leash one day and attacks someone....methinks you have a disaster waiting to happen on your hands. You should consider the safety of others and do the right thing.

why not just cook the damn puppy and be done with the stress of having to spank

its normal, your dog loves you and its just trying to portect you, GSDs are very protective, if you had a rott. no one will be able to shake your hand when you are outside your compound on the streets, thats dogs for you, very protective of their owners, but be sure to understand the behaviour if its really aggressive to finish an attack or it is just threatning people.

Every dog deserves a home, not every home deserves a dog....
