Sitting Governors and Governors-elect on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) may be the first set of Nigerians to get a slice of the ‘Change’ revolution their party initiated.

This is as President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has stated unequivocally that experienced technocrats and individuals of impeccable character would form his cabinet.

Buhari, who spoke at a meeting with northern leaders in Abuja on Sunday, noted that Nigerians were desperate to see and feel good governance and to this end, he would hit the ground running once he took his seat as the nation’s leader.

Urging the people to be patient with his administration, Buhari assured that he would give priority to security, education and employment generation.

The comment by the president-elect has caused disquiet in the APC, especially among governors, who often regard themselves as kingmakers.

Since 1999, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made it a custom of sort to call for names for ministerial appointments from governors.

Usually, PDP Governors forward three names from their respective states to the president, with the most preferred listed as number one.

In states where the opposition occupies the Government House, PDP state chapters are also asked to provide three names.

The names are then sent to the Department of State Security (DSS) for clearance.

The sitting president picks whoever he pleases afterwards.

However, the governors are allowed to put in good words for their most preferred nominee which, in most cases, see such persons making the list of ministerial nominees sent to the Senate for approval.

For the two remaining names, some get Ambassadorial positions, while others get appointed as board chairmen or members.

But from the body language of General Buhari, the tradition of governors submitting names for federal cabinet may be abandoned.

While it is expected that party leaders and chieftains would promote some individuals, whether the nominees get Buhari’s nod or not will seemingly be at his prerogative.

Another indication came to light when Buhari rejected the governors’ plan to endorse a ministerial list presented to him last Tuesday.

Led by Progressives Governors Forum Chairman and Imo State helmsman, Rochas Okorocha, the states governors had visited Buhari in Abuja on a congratulatory visit.

After pledges of loyalty and readiness to support his administration, the governors raised the idea to tender a ministerial list for consideration of the president-elect.

Expecting a favourable response, what they got was a shocker.

Buhari reminded them that the Constitution does not make it mandatory for a president to consult governors before naming a cabinet.

Sources say the governors are now brainstorming on how best to push their candidates through.

DAILY POST gathered that Buhari would, however, consider submitted names of persons with proven track record and with no established case(s) of corruption.

It was also learnt that although the president-elect already has some names in mind, he has formed a search party to get him names of good hands in states where he needs adequate consultations.

Buhari is expected to send his cabinet list some days after inauguration of the 8th Senate next month.

Buhari knows who to consult to make his selections. You'll be surprised with the qualifications of those you'll see on the list of ministerial appointments. Leadership, character and record will be the top considerations. But also political affiliation will be considered...

This is a good start by GMB.

He needs to send a clear message that he cannot be dictated to.

Consulting APC's leadership and asking for a few nominations is important though.

I wouldn't advise Buhari to thread this path. These governors played important role and fought hard for Buhari to ascend the presidency. It is not wise not to get their inputs. Team work is the best. You can't do it all by yourself, Buhari be warned!

Away with PDP and their corruption-centric traditions.
With PDP appointments are all about settlement of cronies... and little to do with competence, job performance or national development.

Change is here.

This is a good move by GMB, we r about 2 see good governance in this country where people will not have a regret of voting their leaders. Its not all about political party or Godfather, let d people with good track record be on the cabinet, so that we can all see the change.
