I think stories like this dilutes the efforts of the main forces involved.

Not denying the mercs efforts, but it was also done largely with the collaboration of our own 'force multipliers'. What they brought to the fold was superior tactics due to their past 'bush wars' knowledge. of course, you'd need a team to execute it which was largely our soldiers.

The Dogs of War giving good account of themselves once again in the brush wars of Africa.

"Relentless Pursuit" is a concept I just love. It brings to mind a pack of hungry lions closing in methodically on a weakened herd of fleeing antelope, picking off the stragglers as they move, yet never stopping the assault until the last of the fleeing beasts is dead on its back, with its lifeless hooves pointing skyward in final surrender.

So now we know what happened to the founders of the mercenary group Executive Outcomes. They never went away, and they refused to die, in order that they continue roaming the African bush, looking for a fight and finding one in which to draw terrorist blood once again.

Yeeeeeeeeehaw ! The only thing more deadly than a young mercenary fighter is an OLD mercenary fighter, and if you doubt this truism, ask the few Boko Haram terrorists who miraculously survived that relentless pursuit, and all the other dirty tricks up the sleeve of those grizzled old warriors-for-hire.
Is Buhari no longer the sponsor of Boko Haram? You went about this forum f00lishly cursing the General because of one disgrace of PhD holders. Are your eyes now open to see how GEJ has been deceiving you?

For your information good sir, Mr. Boko Hari had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the engagement of those deadly South African mercenaries, and furthermore, Nigeria's new Seriki RULER may take the foolhardy step of asking those highly effective mercs to leave Nigeria, even though the terror gang remains a credible threat that may still give the Nigerian military a run for its money in the coming months and possibly years.

The neo-colonial revisionists were always going to come, weren't they? The find it odd, certainly repulsive that a black nation should be portrayed being able to solve its own security problems without 'help' from the West. It is odd, reprehensible and certainly a wide deviation from the single-story of African nations being able to solve its own problems. And then they spin beautiful lies- this time, a spurious claim of white mercenaries coming as divine commandos to solve the problem of the black man.

Nothing can be further from the truth. And don't tel me South Africans are still Africans. There's a reason why this writer uses the 'white' South African construct. A reason which is as old as colonialism itself. The distinction, the classification, them vs us; the differentness, one side the helper and the other side, the helpless.

We see through that veil. Easily.

This is as malicious and spurious as it can get. In the first instance, why would South Africa allow such to happen- South Africa which is in diplomatic animosity with Nigeria? South Africa that botched Nigeria's attempt- not once but twice- to purchase arms from its country? This clearly does not make sense. And if the mercenaries were covert, why did South Africa not expose these practice- as it did for the $9.3m black market arms purchase that Nigeria attempted?

It was weapons that prevented Nigeria from winning the war and certain internal infractions she had. The weapons eventually came from Russia and China and at that time, the successful advances began by the Nigeria military and its West African multinational partners. Not the neo-colonial hogwash of 'white mercenaries'. Unsurprisingly, no one residing in the affected areas of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa State have seen these mercenaries. Are these 'mercenaries' also ghosts?

We seem to forget that it was the Nigerian military that won the war in Liberia; that won the war in Sierra Leone; it was a Nigerian lead battalion that saved the Americans in the hands of the hardened Somalia militia in Mogadishu after their two Blackhawks were shot down. It was the Nigerian military that sent the largest battalion of troops to neighbouring Mali which was being overrun by tribal terrorists, before the French came. Anyone conversant with the truth knows this. Hands off, revisionists from our history. We can tell our stories by ourselves.

Put yourself in the shoes of President Jonathan for an instant. You find yourself Commander-in-Chief of a military force whose officer cadre is infiltrated by moles and double agents all working to actualize the political power monopoly claimed as a birthright by a shadowy petro-dollar funded cartel of northern Nigerians that have outlived the tenure of many an elected president. At the same time public threats to "make Nigerian ungovernable", issued by political opposition leaders, take the form of sustained and spreading guerilla warfare waged in Nigeria's north east, and costing more federal combatant lives with every day of battle.

Enter stage-right a mean old, cool-under-fire brush fighter, whose MULTIRACIAL operatives are selected from the battle-tested elite of the worlds armed forces, all backed by light armor and fleets of ex-Soviet MiL helicopters gunships, and one can see why Johnathan prudently signed on the dotted line to bring in seasoned mercenary pros trained to fight dirty, and close deals quickly in Africa and beyond.

There is NO shame in forming military alliances in furtherance of a common good, just as the US frequently does in the Middle East. Insisting that Nigeria ought to reject offers of military assistance, from REPUTABLE private organizations capable of shortening an ongoing war, hints at a desire to see that war prolonged at great cost in lives and property. One can only hope that the above outburst from Mr. Madrid is not a cry for more, rather than less war in Nigeria.

Thank you for your response, Orlando. Yes indeed sir, it is an open secret that the Boko Haram terror gang is essentially the armed wing of Nigeria's decades-old Born-to-Rule cartel, whose political point-man has of course been Buhari right from day one. With key Nigerian military officers secretly serving the interests of the Born-To-Rule proponents and their Boko Haram foot soldiers, by actively sabotaging military operations to disastrous effect on the federal side, it was imperative that outgoing President Jonathan looked OUTWARDS in search of a means to checkmate Boko Haram's southern advance BEFORE the end of his term in office as Nigeria's president.

By inviting freelance mercenaries to attack Boko Haram full on, President Jonathan did the right thing, EVEN THOUGH the Boko Haram terror gang was due to wind down all its operations shortly, as its contract expires, now that a Born-To-Rule LEADER has been "selected" for the Nigerian electorate, whose oil wealth will now remain safely in the hands of the northern monopolists, until at least the year 2579.

You are hopelessly naive if you truly believe the standard process of buying weapons from a sovereign nation is to illegally smuggle in $7m into a country. What can $7m buy? It can barely cover a 2nd hand Assault helicopter.
This article should tell even one such as yourself that that money was meant for payment to the mercenaries for their efforts.

No. These weapons are most likely the 'loaner' weapons the foreign mercs brought with them, which will leave Naija as soon as their contract ends. The $1bn Jonathan applied to borrow has largely not been spent.
What stopped Nigeria from getting these weapons from Russia and China in 2012?

It is also the Nigerian military that was being overrrun by Boko Haram in Borno, often being chased out of their barracks and harried into Cameroon and Niger. It is entirely m0r0nic to try to make points in this manner when we have recent histories of failures to secure our own people within our own borders.
BH had control of 12 LGAs in the North by Q4 last year. Let that sink in.

Actually, YOU are the revisionist here. The Nigerian troops were used mainly as support, and sources say the troops sent were in shocking condition. Chad is the country being given the most credit for the 'boots-on-ground' rout of the islamists in Mali.

"He contacted me on Twitter and I told him to speak to the NA. I have been emphatic that any victories by the NA were NA victories and not STTEPs. He, as many other journos, do not want to give the NA any credit.
I have asked the question to them why they do not investigate the “training” the NA got from the other foreign trainers for several years and why that training was so ineffective. It seems this is something they desperately wish to avoid."

If Barlow himself could say this, why then is it that nigerians have decided to deride their military. In essence, your argument holds no water when the man being discussed refutes the spurious claims of a lazy journalist.

You can choose what to believe. I remain incredulous that you think Barlow will come on Twitter or a blog to shit on his current employer.

He said his own men pilot their assault helicopters to attack Boko Haram. That's direct, decisive intervention there.

What you quote even further lends credence to the idea that the mercs are the backbone of the assault. The western trainers refused to join in combat operations. Barlow did not.

Training alone is not always a sure guarantee. The US spent billions training and equipping the Iraqi and Yemeni forces. Both were routed by ISIS and AL qaeda respectively.

[b]Let us use our brain for a moment:

Are we supposed to believe that:

A rag tag group of religious extremists that took up arms just 3years ago, and who travels around on motorbikes / small pickup vehicles carrying small arms; are too good for the combined forces of the great Nigerian military (that simultaneously won 2 regional civil wars within months under Gen. Abacha), Chad, Cameroon, Niger, with assistance of France, America and Uk? That we have to be now employing racist white mercenaries also, and yet Boko Haram still survives?

Common now!

If it is not making sense, it is because you are being told a lie and you need to start to search for the truth.

Why is America with is Africom involvement not giving us more assistance?

Why has America even failed to label Boko haram as a terrorist group?

Why is America so involved in our internal affairs, yet seems unwilling to assist to end the Boko Haram menace?

Truth is is that Boko haram is backed by America for the sole purpose of contributing to the disintegration of Nigeria in 2015

Chad, Cameroon, Niger are puppets of France who are assisting America in breaking Nigeria up, those francophone countries would be allowed by America to annex Nigerian territories.

Boko haram that is being used as the excuse to invite Chad into Nigeria are made up of Chadian and other Francophone troops in mufti. The only people being killed in the so-called war on Boko Haram are thousands if not millions of innocent Nigerians that refuse to be "internally displaced".

The "war" is shrouded in secrecy and most of news we are fed comes from Chadian military showing pictures of Nigerians they massacred on the orders of America and reporting it as victims of the phantom "Boko Haram"

I can hear some people saying "oh but Buhari is coming"
All I say is pray that nothing happens to Buhari before he gets his hands on power.

Why does America want Nigeria to "disintegrate in 2015"?

Again, more epic bullcrap.
A strong leader would work to purge elements that were preventing his orders from being carried out. A strong leader would have identified the chief issues facing his army: poor morale, lack of weaponry, corruption and worked harder to fix them. It's not rocket science.

Are troops complaining that their salaries are being halved? Follow the chain of command, find out the officers responsible for salary disbursement and PUBLICLY court-martial them. Rinse and repeat, until salaries flow unimpeded

Troops complain about lack of weapons and ammunition? Review inventory, using trusted aides. Query quartermasters, demand weekly reports on fighting strength of frontline troops. Send trusted aides to inspect and review.

PapiWata:

You mean the 'ungovernable' threat made by a card-carrying member of the PDP? Or the guerrila war that only seriously kicked off in 2013, after dilly-dallying from the President led to BH having enough time to arm and equip themselves, transforming from hiluxes and motorcycles to APCs and RPGs?

PapiWata:

Enter stage-right a mean old, cool-under-fire brush fighter, whose MULTIRACIAL operatives are selected from the battle-tested elite of the worlds armed forces, all backed by light armor and fleets of ex-Soviet MiL helicopters gunships, and one can see why Johnathan prudently signed on the dotted line to bring in seasoned mercenary pros trained to fight dirty, and close deals quickly in Africa and beyond.

If by 'quickly', you mean waiting nearly 3 years to crack down on Boko Haram?
Ask yourself why Chad did not need to engage the services of any foreign PMC to take on Boko Haram. 1500 Chadian soldiers were enough to steamroller BH forces in the areas the Chadian army fought in.

PapiWata:

There is NO shame in forming military alliances in furtherance of a common good, just as the US frequently does in the Middle East. We didn't 'form an alliance in furtherance of a common good' with the South Africans. The did not 'offer military assistance'. They advertised their services FOR PAYMENT!
While we are happy that many hundreds of thousands are being freed from BH tyranny, it is prudent to note that we are spending a massive amount of money that could have been better used to develop our country and our armed forces...if the President and his leadership team had put more effort into resolving the blockers preventing the Nigerian Army from defeating Boko Haram decisively.

The mercs are being paid big bucks. When their contract ends, they will leave. The 15000+ people dead because we did not have the capability to fight BH will not get a second chance at life. BH has been beaten, but still retain enough men and materiel to be a threat in the future. We need renewed effort on making sure our guys can stand on their own and finish the fight.

And yes, there is shame that Niger and Chad are doing in Nigeria what we apparently could not do for years.

It is likely due to its plan to reconquest Africa and secure our natural resources. It is best to achieve this goal if there are no powerful nations like Nigeria left in Africa. When America was predicting the break us almost 20 years ago, we were sceptical, now it has become apparent that America was merely stating an objective they have set themselves - to break up Nigeria.
