You are very naive!
Visa officers dont "have" to do anything.
They certainly dont have to accept micro finance banks ( history shows that they reject most applications with micro finance.)
Please don't insult us by quoting a corrupt organisation like CBN!

$5,000 cash at hand is quite a lot of wad of money to be carrying about. $1000 to $1500 is ok for miscellaneous expenses and initial expenses during your flight and after you land here.

The maximum amount beyond which you should declare amount in possession is $10,000, as at when I travelled during my time. For any amount less than that, you are fine.

If properly managed with good financial discipline credit cards have great benefits. Also if you plan to stay in the U.S. You would need it to build your credit for mortgages etc in the future.

I agree that if not properly manag d you can get into serious financial issues quickly but vice versa if you manage cards very well you can get good benefits.

Given we don't really have a credit culture in Nigeria many international students tend to get in trouble because they get carried away with this credit limit and spend anyhow without understanding how it works.

That's why we would advice internationally students to either avoid or be very careful until you have a steady income and financial discipline. Also having a small manageable limit is good so if you make a mistake it's not bankruptcy level

Sweetie,

if you have bin living"fine" and finding your way around without it. better RUN away from it.
if your priority is car and other stuffs in order of preference you better save save save( from whatever means) by december you should be able to comfortably pay for a cash car.

Dont get. meshed in the American gbese system!!!!!!!!!!!!!

credit card benefits doesnot outweigh a disciplined, cut to coat savings culture dont forget the way credit card ststem is run is "casino" addictive ( hope u understand that)
the real purchasing power lies in your securing a good job and staying financially disciplined!

People habitually on credit cards are not the "big men" the big boys are those with raw cash in the bank grin
no matter how "small"
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 7 by ttmacoy: 5:31pm On Jul 28, 2015
You do not use a credit card to buy a home or car, you use a credit card to build your credit history and score so you can get good rates on mortgages when you buy a home.

Sometimes event if you was to rent an apartment or get a job they would check your credit rating to see if you have financial discipline

stevecrun:
straight talk!!Wise people don't depend on credit to buy a car or a home..I like your writeup bro..

That is not true.

I actually found Americans use their credit card for pretty much everything. Some do not even see their debit card regularly as they use credit cards and clear it up every month.

I use y credit card for weekly grocery shopping and fuel etc, not because I do not have the money but because it builds my credit and also i get cash back. I have my budget for groceries for the month, so use my credit card and clear it up without any interest payment.

I agree that for international students credit card should not be priority as you don't have a steady income etc, but if you are living and working in the US long term, it is required.

as BigFrancis said you need financial discipline to manage it properly, but if managed properly it has it benefits. I get enough points on my Amex a year to go on free holidays or buy stuff without any interest payment.

And all this talk of the rich people do not use credit cards is wrong. If so why have the likes of the Platinum Amex card?

You are right to point out the dangers and i agree for international students the risk is too much to get into debt, but for financially stable and disciplined people in the US, it can be very advantageous.

kobe79:
@ bigfrancis..

it is not advisable to use credit cards to pay for petty tins.
it is actually a bad bad decision it doesn't build your credit at all
i know banks and credit institutions that can cancel terminate or deny u if all you do is run cards at 7 eleven, Starbucks, dollar general etc.

yea i know they want u to spend big so of course they remain in biz.

if feeding becomes an emergency i have to run credit om then wahala dey i for kukuma go buy food stamp from people whey dey sell their own. shuoooooo

the average wise American will rarely rarely run their card for items less than 20bucks.
cash or debit is wat is used.

there are many other ways to build credit enlighten us on thoserather than the above

You both make good points.

I agree with you that international students do not necessarily need a credit card, but if said international student plans to stay and work in the US, it makes sense to start building your credit history through cards of manageable limit and with discipline.

There are jobs that require you to have good credit history especially in the financial services sector etc, and I can attest that when I applied to rent a condo a credit check was conducted to ensure I have a good history and will not be owing landlord their rent as they also have to pay their mortgage.

If you are renting rooms or smaller apartments then maybe not so much, but for bigger more expensive places yes it a credit check is conducted. Without a credit history landlords will request heavy deposits from you as they do not know if you are financially responsible.

kobe79:
@ Francis

you are basically running round the circle and over flogging the poor lil fly
No law in the USA permits an employer to deny u employment based on ur "credit history"

During the boom the credit scheme started out to majorly focus on ailing and healthy businesses with a view to making the economy stronger.

lol when you said landlords, mortgage and auto coys solely reach a negative decision based on credit history!!!!
There is always a first time for everyone but getting a credit card is not a PaNaCea for owning a home or car etc.

If you need a home to build from scratch or an already built one or a car questions asked are far from if you have a credit card or not.

my questio to you is why do you think an intl student need a credit card? a student is here to study even thouhh we know they all would wanna adjust status in furure, if they dont have the raw cash there is no needstaying in buying a house when they just coming in who go approve am or a car? there are millions of students jumping buses and living in apts. and still doing fine.
i amnt Obama and dont wanna be him just like dia are millions of americans on credit card i repeat credit card tgat is ur argument( stay in it) dia are also millions without it

Having no credit history does not make you irresponsible, but it means there is no universally accepted way to confirm you are responsible hence landlords etc will ask you a deposit from you. Even simple getting a phone contract they will ask you for a big deposit because the universally accepted way to confirm the credit worthiness of a person is via their credit history and score.

You do not need a credit card but it is a useful way to build your credit history. Even if it is a $300 credit card and you are spending $50 every month and clearing it up it builds history that this person pays his obligations as and when due.

DeeTus:
@Bigfrancis, CNN is just a cable news network. Having no credit card history does not make someone irresponsible.

Don't rely so much on CNN.

Why not retake the GRE exam as this would help you get into good schools,

Otherwise you would need to focus on MBA programs far down the rankings which also means lower quality of the program unfortunately.

Check the rankings of the schools u applied to, and select lower ranked schools, or write another GRE and Ace it. Get a score of above 300. Try ETSU or Texas A&M Kingsville

So basically, u build points by buying often and big with ur Credit card and repaying on time.

You get points, airline miles, cash back etc by spending. You build a good credit rating and score by paying on time.

By nature of my job which involves lots of travel, i will spend anyway so why not earn points and other benefits with it?
