3. Rashidi Yekini:

The prolific striker was the first Nigerian to take the continental crown and played a key role in some of his country's greatest football moments.

He scored Nigeria's first ever goal at the World Cup, against Bulgaria at USA '94, and led the way as they won the Africa Cup of Nations in the same year.

He is Nigeria's top international scorer, with 37 goals from 58 games.

He was also a prolific goalscorer in club football - seeing huge success with Shooting Stars of Nigeria, Ivory Coast's Africa Sport and Vitoria Setubal of Portugal, amongst others.

Yekini began his career with UNTL FC in Kaduna in northern Nigeria before moving to Shooting Stars, whom he helped to reach the final of the then African Champions Cup in 1984.

That was the same year in which he made his debut for Nigeria - and he was still playing for his country 12 years later, at the World Cup in France in 1998. The moment that took him to global fame came at the World Cup in the United States, when he scored that goal against Bulgaria.

The strike itself was important enough, but the manner of his celebration, grasping the net in exultation (see photo), became an iconic image of the tournament, and of the man.

His death, comes after a long illness, .

"Today I don't think we have a striker who comes even a mile close to how good he was as a striker," his fellow Super Eagles star Sunday Oliseh told the BBC's Sportsworld programme

THE JOURNEY TO 2017 AFCON

Players arrive in Super Eagles camp for AFCON qualifier

Abuja - No fewer than 16 Super Eagles players on Thursday arrived camp in preparation for 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match against Chad.

The encounter, scheduled to take place in Kaduna on June 13, is the Eagles first qualifying match for the tournament.

The team had failed to qualify for the 2015 edition in Equatorial Guinea, won by Cote d’ Ivoire.

Toyin Ibitoye, the Super Eagles Media Officer, said that the 16 players would be joined by 12 others at weekend.

Ibitoye named Chibuzor Okonkwo, Chidiebere Eze, Rabiu Ali, Ezekiel Mba, Mfon Udoh and Esosa Igbinosa as those who had arrived.

He said that Chinedu Udoji, the Captain of Enyimba Intl. FC of Aba, was also among the players that had arrived the team’s camp in Abuja ahead of the encounter scheduled for Kaduna.

"Some of the players have league matches on Friday and are expected to join others on Saturday," he said.

Ibitoye also told media that the team would begin its training at the National Stadium, Abuja on Friday with the 16 players already in camp.

The team’s Head Coach Stephen Keshi, and his assistants - Ike Shorunmu and Salisu Yusuf, as well as other backroom staff, are already in camp.
Re: The Super Eagles of Nigeria Thread. by robosky02(m): 2:35pm On May 23, 2015
Mfon Udoh has been released from the camp of the Super Eagles.

The Enyimba of Aba striker, had reported to camp along with other invited players on Thursday, but had to be excused from camp activities because of an illness that also sidelined him from his club’s Week 10 clash against Elkanemi Warriors in Aba on Wednesday.

Coach Stephen Keshi has assured that Udoh will return to the team, once he has fully recovered from his health challenges.

The former African champions are currently preparing for next month’s 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Chad and a good number of the invited home based players have arrived at the Bolton White Hotels and Apartments in Abuja.

Keshi urged the players to show hunger, commitment and discipline.

He also made it clear that he expects them to justify their invitation to the national team.

Nigeria senior team coach Stephen Keshi has given U20 striker Taiwo Awoniyi the green light to lead the Super Eagles attack when he finishes with the U20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Awoniyi, a top talent in the Flying Eagles squad, is expected to light up the youth championship that starts next week with his eye for goal and impressive physique.

The 18-year-old scored a brace for Samson Siasia’s U23 squad in a recent All African Games qualifier in Lusaka, Zambia, and it would be only a matter of time before he makes his senior team debut.

Keshi told Goal that Awoniyi is ripe enough to lead the Eagles attack but must indicate his readiness to take that responsibility on the field of play.

“If you will recall, I gave Awoniyi his first call up to the Super Eagles sometimes ago because I know that he has the quality of a goal poacher who can deliver the goals when needed,” Keshi told Goal.

“But like I have always explained, playing for the age grade national teams is different from the Super Eagles.

“Taiwo Awoniyi is young and talented and has the quality of a good striker. So who says he can’t lead the Eagles attack?

“He just needs to be ready for the task and show it on the field of play which I believe the boy is capable of doing.”

The 53-year-old wished his future lead man a good time at the Fifa tournament where Nigeria have never won despite reaching two finals.

“I pray that he continues to wax stronger with the Flying Eagles at the World Cup. His performance in New Zealand will be good for his confidence level and will also help prepare him for the Super Eagles task.

“Like I said, the boy is a good player,” he said.

The Nigeria U20 side will begin their title challenge with a game against Brazil on June 1 in New Plymouth

Eagles Call-Up Excites China-Based Striker
By David Meshioye:

Guangzhou RF striker, Aaron Samuel, has expressed his delight and relief over his invitation for the June 6 AFCON qualifier against Chad in Kaduna.

In an exclusive chat with completesportsnigeria.com from his base in China, the former Sarpsborg 08 striker hinted that he would be available for the much anticipated encounter come hell or high water, as Nigeria attempt to return to the pinnacle of African football.

He posited that paramount before him would be how to condition himself for the match to ensure the Super Eagles begin the qualifiers on a sound footing, thereby avoiding some of the pitfalls that characterized the country’s non-qualification for the last AFCON in Equatorial Guinea.
Samuel however stated that he is not expecting an easy ride for Nigeria in the qualifiers, despite being pitted against Egypt, Tanzania and Chad.

“I am excited by the invitation to say the least," he told completesportsnigeria.com on Mondya. "It means a lot is expected from me and my teammates when we return for the qualifier. I really have to work hard and pay back with goals.
"I think there is no small opponent in Africa anymore, our last experience in the qualifiers has taught me that. I don’t expect an easy game against Chad but we will give our best to pick the three points.”

Samuel made his Super Eagles debut in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan which Nigeria lost 1–0 in Khartoum.
The former Valerenga striker opened his goals account in a 3–1 home victory against Sudan. He restored Nigeria’s lead in the 66th minute when he stabbed home a loose ball after a mix-up between Sudan goalkeeper Akram El Hadi and his defender. He later scored his second goal for Nigeria in a 2-0 away victory over Congo

Barring any last minutes hitches, Aaron Samuel is expected to hit Super Eagles camp next week.

Eagles pros get Afcon deadline

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi has set a June 3 deadline for all invited players to report to camp ahead of next month's 2015 Afcon qualifier against Chad.

Fifteen foreign-based players have been called up along with 27 other domestic league invitees for the June 13 clash scheduled to be held in Kaduna.

Captain and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who only recently won his 100th cap, is expected to lead a contingent of established internationals like Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Kenneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona alongside some newcomers to camp in time to beat coach Stephen Keshi's deadline.

“I want all the foreign-based players in camp on or before midnight on Wednesday, June 3.

“Apart from Aaron Samuel who is still involved with his club and has been granted special permission to report to camp after that deadline,I expect to have everybody in by June 3.

“They are to report to the Bolton White Hotel and Apartments where their home-based colleagues have been camped since May 21," said Keshi on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) official website, www.thenff.com.

The domestic Eagles are expected to confront Spotlight FC in a friendly match to open the new Karkanda Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday.

They are expected back in Abuja on Wednesday while training will resume at the Abuja National Stadium on Thursday
