Says, not involved in burial programme

FROM CHUKS ONUOHA, UMUAHIA.

Abia State government was conspicuously absent yesterday at Ngodo Isuochi, Umunneochi Local Government Area, the country home of one of the departed great Igbo sons, distinguished Senator Uche Chukwumerije .

The Special Assistant to Governor Theodore Orji on Political Matters, Chief Ama Abraham, said that Chukwumerije’s family did not carry the government along with their burial arrangement.

However, an impeccable government source told Saturday Sun that the major reason why the government was absent at the burial was because they alleged that Chukwumerije was a secret member of APGA, who partly funded APGA campaigns. Our source further said that the government considers such as, anti-party activity and so resolved not to get involved in his burial.

“They would not come, even if they had been invited, it is sad that this government also extended their hatred to the dead”, the anonymous government source told Saturday Sun in Umuahia.

Late Chukwumereije represented Abia North in the Senate .

The Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Samuel Uche, in his sermon titled, “Judgement”, at the Wesley Cathedral, Ngodo, described the late senator as a man who prepared for death by reconciling with members of his family six days to his death, unlike many who die unprepared, saying that every action of man shall be judged by the all seeing God.

“He condemned corruption and urged Nigerians to be united against it, saying that it has so permeated the society that everywhere from home to offices and churches, corruption has taken over. He said a situation where National Assembly members were paid N300million without projects to show for it. The prelate commended President Jonathan for conceding defeat, which he said was an answer to the prayer of the church for peace in the country . He called on the President –elect, General Mohammadu Buhari, to ensure that the change promised is actualised. “It beats my imagination how a senator can take home N300million; its stealing. You should slash every salary by half, so that we can reduce unemployment in Nigeria.

“We not only have armed robbers, we also have pen robbers at the state and national levels; if you continue like this one day there will be a revolution and you will stand at judgment seat of God,” the Prelate said.

He said further that late Chukwumereije built the Wesley Cathedral to lift the financial burden off the members of the church, describing him as gentle, amiable, accessible and a team player.

Prelate Uche reminded the people that hell was real and urged them to mend their ways before it was too late.

Senate President, Senator David Mark in his remark , said that the red chamber would miss late Chukwumereije.

He described his death as a big loss, stating that the valedictory session held in his honour last Wednesday was unusually attended by about 85 senators at a time the senate has not recorded up to 80 members in attendance.”He was a parliamentarian per excellence,” Mark said.

First son of Chukwumerije, Mr. Che Chika Chukwumereije,in his tribute described his late father as the best father, saying it was the height of fulfilment for a man who rose to the highest echelons of the Biafran struggle to repeat the feat many years later in the Nigerian government. He said this was a testament of his personal qualities and commitment to public service. All Progressive Grand Alliance candidate in 2015 governorship election in Abia State , Dr Alex Otti said the death of Sen. Chukwumerije has left a vacuum that will take ages to fill in the socio-political landscape of the Igbo nation, nay Nigeria.

The Prelate condemned stealing and the huge salary collected by elected officers, yet commended the late senator for building him a cathedral, that's irony. Of course, the money for building the cathedral came from his constitutional development allocations. Afterall, he was a senator for more than 12 years.
