The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has condemned suggestions by some stakeholders in the country, who have advocated that the pregnancy of some Boko Haram female victims, conceived through rape, should be terminated.

The organisation however promised that when delivered, it would assist in the upbringing of the children through “support mechanisms” and “crisis pregnancy management centers.”

Chairman of the Health Committee of CBCN and Auxiliary Bishop of Abuja (Catholic Archdiocese), Most Rev. Anselm Umoren, stated these during a press conference on Monday in Abuja.

He queried how Nigeria would accept to visit such innocent children “with capital  punishment” in the name of abortion for an offence they did not commit simply because their fathers were misguided religious and ideological bigots.

The cleric said, “Specifically, it is not tenable, the suggestion that killing the babies conceived through rape by the terrorists, is the most humane action to take in this instance. Since the babies are ignorant and innocent of the crimes – aggression, sexual assault, dehumanisation – against their mothers, it is unethical to punish them for the sins and offences of their erring fathers.”

The group said one of its support mechanisms would be the establishment of crisis-pregnancy management centres to help Nigerians, who might stand in need of similar help anywhere in the country.

While expressing deep sorrow at the trauma endured by many Nigerians under the orgy of violence and terror by the Boko Haram sect, the CBCN said it opposed the “shallow arguments” being promoted by some individuals and groups, saying it meant repaying violence with an even more vicious violence.

The Bishops advised the victims to draw comfort from God, adding that the life of every baby is distinct, different and unique from that of their parents.

This is a serious issue of morality... Am 100% percent against abortion... But in this case, any victim that wants to abort the baby should do so.... I cant imagine training a child that will "ALWAYS" remind you of the horro you pass through in BH camp... This is not a case of one time rape and pregnancy but of torture, forced slavery/marriage and repeated raping... Abeg, I hate to say this, but the bishop shld free them...

The bishop cannot force the women to keep the pregnancy. it's their right to decide if they want the pregnancy or not. Those of them who have decided to keep their pregnancy, the church should help them.

no Bishop is forcing any woman to keep any pregnancy.

The Bishops convention is only trying to condemn the suggestion by those advocating for the termination of the pregnancy.

I hate abortions, but the babies can become sources of endless nightmares reminding the women of the traumatic experiences of their captivity and ordeal with those scumbags.
The final choice rest on these women that were traumatised, raped & forcefully impregnated by these holigans.
Anyway sha ! the bishops can write an undertaken that the babies would be adopted by the catholic church & the women will do the needful.
