Probes & Politics Of Casting The First Stone by Duhduhduh: 10:54am On May 28, 2015 |
Today is May 28, 2015 (D- Day minus 1) for transition or "regime change" as someone adamantly puts it. President Jonathan says, "Don't single me out for probe!" (See Punch Newspapers http://www.punchng.com/news/dont-single-me-out-for-probe-jonathan- tells-buhari/ ). The meat of the Punch story runs thus: "President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday advised the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, not to single out his administration in any probe he may want to carry out after his inauguration on Friday. He said all those advising Buhari to probe his administration must also advise him to extend his probe beyond his regime or else, the probe will be seen as a witch-hunt. Jonathan made his position known at the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council which he presided over at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He also said those calling for his administration’s probe should add that the probe should be extended to the way oil wells and fields were allocated in the past." Now, from the many sides of the coin point of view (which is indeed manifold), my question to us is why didn't General Muhamadu Buhari honour similar probes in the past? Let's take a short trip back in time (like my favourite childhood "Dr. Who"...and let's see a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) report in 2001 (Obasanjo's civilian adminstration) on why Buhari refused to honour the Oputa Panel invitation to look into issues of his administration as Head of State. Here: " One of Nigeria's former military rulers has launched a vitriolic attack against the country's human rights commission. President Olusegun Obasanjo The president established the Oputa panel two years ago General Muhammadu Buhari also outlined the personal reasons for his refusal to attend the public hearings of the so-called Oputa panel. Three former military rulers - General Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida, and Abdulsalam Abubakar - have repeatedly defied summonses to appear before the panel to answer allegations of rights abuses. The panel, established by President Olusegun Obasanjo two years ago, ended its formal sessions last month. Final request The Oputa group made one final request to all of Nigeria's former military heads of state to explain their failure to appear. But General Buhari, who led a coup in 1983 and ruled until he himself was overthrown two years later, wrote back reiterating his refusal to testify. He wrote in the letter that it would serve no purpose to appear since the panel had already roundly accused the military heads of state publicly as individuals. He said there was nothing remotely personal in the actions of his government. He also suggested the panel consider the failings of other governments, and not his own. " (Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/1668858.stm ) So back to the future...to the now....D-Day May 29, 2015 and forward....who will be probing whom based on antecedents? |

From the same B.B.C report, " The behaviour of the generals has angered human rights lawyers, most notably Chief Gani Fawihinmi. In his own furious letter to the panel published in Wednesday's press, he demanded the commission take much sterner action against those who virtually crushed Nigeria. " Well, apparently, this was not 'feasible' nor 'possible' as even Obj just let 'sleeping dogs lie'. Gani is long gone and many "activists" we see now have not and cannot demonstrate the sterling virtues of independence of thought, integrity, honesty, and impartiality regularly exhibited by Chief Gani. GOD bless Nigeria! |
