The newly elected President Mohammadu Buhari, on Friday embarrassed world leaders at his first official function, when he abandoned world leaders and country representatives midway, at his inaugural lunch, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for a special prayers at the National Mosque.

Mr Buhari, who arrived from the inauguration grounds, at about 1.45pm to attend the lunch for the world leaders, who attended his inauguration, left the guests halfway at the lunch to attend the 'special prayers" with some top All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts.

Some personalities who accompanied the president for the special prayers at the National Mosque, were former Vice President Atiku Abubkar, former chief of army staff Gen. Bello Dambazzau, some top government functionaries as well as Muslim leaders.

Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who was drafted in to stand in for the president midway apologised to the guests for the president's actions, which obviously unsettled the visiting world leaders.

Mr. Buhari didn't return to the lunch for the visiting leaders when the ceremony ended at about 3.15pm.

"This is a huge embarrassment to the country," a senior diplomat told our correspondent, at the venue of the lunch.
