Ekiti Varsity Shut, As Non-academic Staff Protest Unpaid Salaries by shachris02: 7:42am On May 30, 2015
The Senior Staff Union, the Non-Academic Staff Union and the National Association of Academic Technologists of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, have embarked on a no-work protest over salaries owed their members since March 2015.

They have vowed not to return to work until the three months salaries are paid.

The strike has brought the school to another period of closure for the second time after an earlier strike by the Academic Staff Union of the university was called off.

There were indication that ASUU is in support of the strike action even though it did not openly endorse it.

The ASUU Chairman in EKSU, Prof Olufayo Olu-Olu, said the union could not take a lead role in the protest because it had yet to obtain approval from its congress.

Academic activities didn’t hold Friday as students could not enter the school premises following the closure of the entrances to the school by the aggrieved workers.

The Chairman of SSANU, Kolawole Falade, said the unions arrived at the decision to embark on a protest at its meeting held on Tuesday.

He said, “The three unions-SSANU, NASU and NAAT met under the Joint Action Committee on Tuesday and decided to embark on the protest to demand payment of our three months salaries.

“We have also not received our earned allowances from 2012 up till date. We also need a Governing Council of the university.

“There is also the need for the State Government to increase the monthly subventions to the university from N260 million because of the College of Medicine.”
