Global Alert Issued On Nigerian Banks by Nobody: 8:59am On Feb 16, 2009
A global alert has been issued on Nigerian Banks by the Financial Investigation Bureau in London. The FIB says there has been a recent spike in fraudulent activities involving the banks.

The organisation says it has been monitoring a ‘’ noticible increase in fraud and attempted fraud ‘’ involving many Nigerian bank employees in collusion with bank customers.

No specific details of any crime was provided by the FIB which is an intelligence institution domicilled in the International Chamber of Commers in London.

However in recent times, Nigerian regulatory authorities have indicted a host of Nigerian bank employees for money laundering and other fraudulent activities.

In one such case officials of a Port Harcourt branch of Zenith Bank, one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks, were arraigned before a federal high court sitting in Port Harcourt over the fraudulent withdrawal of 2.3 billion naira from the Rivers State government account.

The three accounts officers: Mohammed Koko, Chimezie Kanu, John Ologundare, and an operations manager, Oropo Olakunle, are facing trial over a 19 count charge of money laundering and advanced fee fraud.

The alert by FIB comes at a time when financial investigators in Nigeria are so worried at the rampant cases of bank fraud that they have invited all Chief Executives of the twenty four commercial banks in the country to a meeting next week.

The details of what is to be discussed remain sketchy.Concern about fraud in the banking sector is believed to have reached the higest level of government.
