Senator Ahmed Lawan and Senator George Akume were on Saturday announced as sole candidates for the position of President and Deputy Senate President of the 8th Senate respectively, by the All Progressives Congress. This followed a primary election conducted by the leadership of the party in which out of 33 Senators accredited, Lawan got 32 votes while one vote was declared invalid. Akume also polled 32 out of 33 votes.

Lawan while delivering his acceptance speech said although he was grateful for the confidence reposed in him by the party and his colleagues, it saddens his heart that his colleagues “in the other camp” boycotted the primary. He pleaded for the assistance of the NWC to win over all other senators in the National Assembly not only because their support is needed to win on Tuesday, but to effectively lead the Senate.
