Senate Presidency: Saraki’s Election Splits Ondo APC by HzRF(m): 3:07am On Jun 15, 2015
The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State has described the backing of Bukola Saraki’s candidature for the Senate Presidency by Tayo Alasoadura (Ondo Central) as odd and anti-party.
Although the party said on Sunday that it will abide by the decision of its National Working Committee regarding sanctions or otherwise for those involved, it noted that the senator “acted alone.”
The Ondo State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Omo’ba Adesanya, told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Alasoadura acted in variance to the aims and objectives of the party.
Mr. Alasoadura was the only senator elected on the APC platform from the south west who reportedly voted against the party’s decision to have Ahmed Lawan emerge as the Senate President.
“The action of the senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District does not represent the position of the party in the state.
“We will like to make it clear so that people do not have the idea that he acted in respect of the mandate of the people in Ondo State.
“It is clear his conduct is anti-party, but we will align ourselves with whatever decision is reached at the national working committee as regards sanctions and penalties,” Mr. Adesanya said.
Meanwhile, some leaders of the party at the local government areas within the central senatorial district have risen in defence of the senator for backing Saraki.
They said they gave their consent to the senator before he cast his lot with Saraki, a leader of the APC in Kwara State, who went against the party’s decision to support Ahmed Lawan for Senate President.
They Ondo APC leaders held that Mr. Alasoadura consulted widely before supporting Mr. Saraki to emerge the President of the Senate, arguing that such action could not be anti-party.
In a communique issued in Akure on Sunday and signed by the Chairman of the party in Akure North Local Government, Eleti Joshua, and his Secretary, Tunde Adesunloro, as well as other members, the politicians declared that they had suspended the leader of Ward 9, Ojo Adegbola and Saka Ogunleye for criticizing the senator’s action.
They declared that the suspension of Messrs. Adegbola and Ogunleye was with immediate effect.
The communique reads: “There was no local government executive meeting where distinguish Senator Alasoadura was reprimanded for his action and such directive could not have emanated at all.
“Having gone through our pary (APC) constitution and Federal Republic of Nigeria constitution, there is no where it is written that you cannot support any candidate of your choice and interest. Therefore, senator Donald Tayo Alasoadura has not in anyway violated APC constitution as well as that of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Judging from the above, the entire APC members in Akure North Local Government strongly believe in the personality of the Senator Alasoadura, his leadership and his ability to give good representation.
“We hereby suspend Saka Yusuf Ogunleye indefinitely along side his party Ward 9 Chairman, Ojo Adegbola and their suspension takes immediate effect.”
