Nigeria's Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki has reacted to the social media fury about the reported $45m (£28m) wardrobe allowance for the country's 469 legislators, saying they will be accountable to the people.

But in a series of tweets via @bukolasaraki, Bukola Saraki says that the actual annual allowance is $2,500 (N506,600) for each Senator, not $110,000 (N18,000,000) each as reported by two mischievous Nigerian newspapers on Tuesday.

He added the body responsible for setting legislators' salaries and allowances, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) was looking into the matter and would publish details of their remuneration on its website.
