Cameroonian Officials To Handle Falconets’ Saturday Clash With South Africa

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Cameroon’s Therese Neguel as the centre referee for Saturday’s 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African final qualifying round match in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first leg match is between the Falconets of Nigeria and South Africa’s Basetsana.

Neguel, 34 and a FIFA referee since 2007, will be assisted by compatriots Josiane Nfongan, Carine Fomo and Therese Abou’ou.

They will perform respectively in the roles of Assistant Referee 1, Assistant Referee 2 and Reserve Referee.

Also, Zalikatou Traore from Guinea will serve as the game’s Match Commissioner.

The winners between reigning world vice-champions Falconets and the Basetsana on aggregate will qualify for the 8th FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea in 2016.

To reach this final round, the Falconets defeated Democratic Republic of Congo home and away for a 4-1 aggregate victory.
Also, the Basetsana pipped Zambia’s junior girls 3-2 on aggregate.

NAN reports that the Basetsana delegation is expected to arrive in Abuja on Thursday.(NAN)

Papua New Guinea confirmed as hosts of FIFA under-20 Women's World Cup despite venue concerns

By Liam Morgan

Papua New Guinea has been officially confirmed as the host of the 2016 FIFA under-20 Women’s World Cup after world football’s governing body agreed to let the Pacific nation host all matches in capital city Port Moresby.

There were concerns that the country may be stripped of the event due to sub-standard facilities outside of the capital, but the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) addressed FIFA’s fears and have now been given the go-ahead to stage next year’s tournament.

FIFA had given the PNGFA a month to make necessary improvements to their plan or risk losing the hosting rights for the event.

In their original proposal, the PNGFA vowed to utilise venues in the nation’s other provinces but these plans have been abandoned, with the governing body’s vice-president Linda Wonuhali admitting there were too many hurdles to clear if FIFA’s demands were to be met.

A dossier detailing the changes requested was submitted before a deadline of October 15 and Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) President David Chung delivered a copy to FIFA’s Executive Committee meeting in Zurich this week.

The existing Sir John Guise Stadium, which was one of the main venues used for the Pacific Games in July, will undergo renovations to bring it up to FIFA’s standards.

The Sir Hubert Murray Stadium, which played host to the men’s and women’s Olympic qualifying final at the Pacific Games and came under criticism for a poor playing surface, will also be used, as will the National Football Stadium, due to be completed by the summer of next year.

The last of the four venues will be a 5,000-capacity “pop-up” stadium, located at Bisini Sports Complex, the PNGFA has confirmed.

“On the back of the Pacific Games we have an opportunity to build on a legacy that will help attract more world class events to the country,” Chung said.

“The cooperation between all stakeholders shows the pride we have as a nation to show the world we can host these events.

“Papua New Guinea is truly positioning itself as the sporting hub of the Pacific.”

Chung also revealed Papua New Guinea will host the OFC Nations Cup, a quadrennial tournament most recently won in 2012 by Tahiti, the first time either Australia or New Zealand hadn’t lifted the trophy, in 2016 after it was the only country to submit a bid.

The announcements mark another step forward for a country which is continually trying to establish itself as a major player in the sporting world and follows Port Moresby being awarded three 2017 Rugby League World Cup matches, all of which will feature Papua New Guinea, with the tournament being officially co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

“The Nations Cup will provide us with a platform to test the various concepts of operations we are proposing so that when the FIFA Women’s under-20 World Cup arrives our fields and our people will be ready," added Chung.

“Our mission is to inspire and to excel, not only for Papua New Guineans, but for other nations to see that it can be done."

The FIFA under-20 Women’s World Cup will take place in November 2016 and will feature 16 teams from across the globe.

Meet the woman who convinced Courtney Dike's parents to let her play
By Jenni Carlson

Lisa Miley hasn't coached Courtney Dike in almost a decade, and yet, she still gets posters and notes and nice little gestures out of the blue that let her know her greatest pupil is thinking about her.

The texts on Mother's Day and Easter and pretty much every other holiday always amaze Miley.
"Who does that?" she said. "She is generous. She is thoughtful."

She is thankful, too.
After all, without Miley, Dike might not be where she is today. The standout high school career at Edmond North? The college scholarship to Oklahoma State, where she has two years remaining? The selection to the Nigerian national team and her first international cap last Friday against Sweden?
None of it might've happened.

On the day that Nigeria plays the United States in the third and final game of group play in the World Cup, Dike hopes to knock off players she idolized growing up.

But it's safe to say there's no one more important to her career than Lisa Miley.

The coach had to convince Dike's parents to let her play.
Miley was coaching the girls soccer team at Edmond North at the same time the oldest of the Dike kids was starring. Bright would go on to play at Notre Dame, then in the MLS, and Miley found out that he had sisters. Kimberly was the oldest, followed by Brittny and Courtney.

Kimberly played in the Edmond Soccer Club with Miley's daughter, but it was short lived. Kimberly was a better at basketball than soccer.

But in 2006 when Miley was coaching for the Edmond Soccer Club and promised to cobble together a team after ending up with one little girl left over after tryouts, she thought of the Dike girls. Brittny was in sixth grade, and Courtney was in fifth grade, exactly the ages she needed.

The girls wanted to play.
Their parents wanted nothing of the sort.
Part of it was financial. Jacinta and Vincent Dike came to the United States from Nigeria with nothing. No money. No jobs. No promise of success.

Both of them worked three or four jobs to make ends meet, so the idea of spending thousands of dollars on competitive soccer was tough to stomach. They'd done it for Bright and Kimberly, but with Bright graduated and Kimberly out of soccer, Jacinta and Vincent weren't looking to write any more checks for cleats or uniforms or out-of-town tournaments.

But part of their resistance was cultural, too.
"In their society," Miley said, "soccer is not a girls' sport."
When Jacinta and Vincent were growing up in Nigeria, they were taught that girls and women played basketball and croquet and badminton and tennis and all sorts of other sports. But soccer?

That was for boys and men.
Miley struggled to wrap her head around that thinking. She had long conversations with Jacinta, trying to understand.

Finally, Jacinta said, "Would you be happy if your daughter came home and told you that she was going to play for the Edmond North football team?"

Lisa Miley

"Probably not," Miley admitted.
"That's what it sounds like to me when you say, 'I want your daughter to play soccer.'"

That helped Miley understand -- but it didn't stop her from trying to convince the Dikes that the girls should play. She knew that they had soccer in their genes. She knew, too, that they wanted to play.

Eventually, Jacinta and Vincent invited Miley to their house. She sat in their formal living room and made her pitch. She would take the girls to practice. She would bring them home. She would do whatever had to be done to make it work.

"This is the third team," she told Jacinta and Vincent. "This is the C team. I promise you, we're not going to go to Dallas, we’re not going to go to Kansas City, we’re not going to do indoor soccer, all the trappings of a competitive team. I promise we won’t do it.
"Please, let us have the girls."
Finally, the Dikes relented -- the girls could play.

Miley got to deliver the news.
"Are you serious?" Brittny and Courtney asked in disbelief.
"Your parents said yes!"
Disbelief dissolved into smiles and laughter.

"You're kidding me!"
Miley counts that as one of the times in her life that she saw pure joy. It was the kind of wonder that parents see in their children on Christmas morning. But for Miley and the Dike girls, that was only the beginning.

It was clear fairly quickly that they were better than the average girls, especially Courtney. She was quicker and stronger, and while she wasn't refined, she was dominant. Her abilities made for a team with an interesting mix of players.

Miley called them the Bad News Bears.
"We had people that should probably never have been on a competitive team," she said, "and we had Courtney Dike. We had the spectrum. We had from A to Z."
It was a C team to be reckoned with.

Courtney quickly moved up to better teams. She would star for Edmond Soccer Club, Oklahoma Football Club and Edmond North, all of which led to Oklahoma State and the Nigerian national team.

But without Lisa Miley, who knows if Courtney Dike would've played competitive soccer much less reached the sport's pinnacle.

Miley is happy to have played a part, not so much because of the player that Courtney has become but because of the kind of person she has always been.

"Courtney was always so impressive," Miley said. "Whether Courtney was playing for the Bad News Bears or the Nigerian team, she's the same."

Thoughtful. Generous. And yes, thankful.

South Africa U20 women arrive Abuja for Falconets

Abuja - The delegation of U-20 Women National Team of South Africa, Basetsana, landed in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier against the Falconets of Nigeria.

Also on Thursday, Falconets’ Head Coach, Peter Dedevbo said that the reigning world vice champions are ready to make Nigeria proud on Saturday, as they target a handsome win that will make the return leg in Johannesburg a comfortable session.

The South African delegation, led by Mr. Ndlelo, and with Head Coach Elizabeth Migchelsen and assistant coaches Sheryl Botes, Maud Khumalo and Cameron Cox, arrived aboard an Emirates Airline flight from Dubai.

Notable among the 20 Basetsana players on the delegation are Thato Letsoso, Mosili Makhoali, Thembi Kgatlana, Amanda Mthandi and Linda Motlhalo.

The match, which is the first leg of the African final qualifying round, will start at 3pm at the National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday.

Falconets, who emerged runners-up at the last FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2014, whipped Liberia 14-1 on aggregate in the first round, before routing Democratic Republic of Congo 4-1 in the last round.

The Basetsana were held 0-0 in Zambia but edged the hard –fighting Zambians 3-2 at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa in the return leg.

Ghana’s Black Princesses will clash with Ethiopia’s U-20 girls in Addis Ababa on Sunday in the other fixture, with the two winners from both fixtures qualifying for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

Nigeria's Falconets have played in every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup since it was launched in Canada in 2002.

Basetsana Out For Revenge Against Nigeria
Basetsana Prepared For Final World Cup Qualifier

National Team, Basetsana, have arrived in Abuja, Nigeria, ahead of their World Cup qualifier.

Basetsana face off against their Nigerian counterparts at the National Stadium in Abuja on Saturday in what will be the first leg of their third and final round of 2016 Women’s U20 World Cup qualifiers.

The national team face one of the toughest teams on the continent after progressing to the final round of qualifiers by beating the likes of Botswana and Zambia.

“This is a different match that requires different strategies. The good thing is that we have played Nigeria before and we sort of know what to expect. They are physical and quick, so we have to play to our strengths and not try to go toe to toe with them,”

Basetsana captain Amogelang Motau said in an official press release.

“They denied us a chance to go to the u20 Women’s World Cup held two years ago in Canada. The first meeting ended in a disappointing 6-0 defeat away, and in the second leg we lost 1-0 at home.

The pain is still fresh, but we had a good run so far in the qualifiers and that gives us the confidence to face them.”

“We are so close to reaching our dream, just two matches and we are there. But we are well aware that it is going to be a tough day at the office so we will have to double our efforts to ensure we do well in the first leg. A goal will be crucial to give us a fighting chance when we host them in two weeks’ time.”

World Cup qualifier: NFF rallies fans against S/Africa

General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi has called on football fans and enthusiasts within the Federal Capital Territory and environs to be at the National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday to cheer the U-20 Women National Team, Falconets, in their World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

The Falconets take on South Africa’s Basetsana in a 2016 FIFA U-20 Women World Cup African final qualifying round match at the nation’s prime venue, starting from 3pm on Saturday.

“We are calling on our football fans to endeavour to be at the National Stadium to cheer our girls to victory. It is a very important match, and the young girls will be encouraged if they see a sizeable crowd of spectators at the stadium.

“The Falconets have always done the country proud. They have always qualified for their version of the World Cup and they need the moral motivation of football fans and enthusiasts in their home matches,” Sanusi said.

The Falconets whitewashed the U-20 girls of Liberia 14-1 on aggregate in the firs round and then spanked their counterparts from the Democratic Republic of Congo 4-1 on aggregate in the second round, to reach this stage.

Ordega: Falconets Will Qualify For U-20 World Cup

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Super Falcons star Francesca Ordega is confident that the Nigerian U-20 women national team will overcome South Africa’s threat and qualify for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Peter Dedevbo’s team defeated the Basetsana 2-1 at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday to make the return a must-not lose game.

Washington Spirit forward Ordega who was in the stands to cheer the Nigerian team told Comple tesportsnigeria.com that she believes the Falconets can surmount the obstacle but agrees that it will not be an easy game.

“Thank God the Falconets won the first leg at home. It’s not a comfortable lead but I believe there’s no way the South Africans can score there that our girls will not score too,” Ordega told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

“My advice to the girls is for them to approach the game as if the first leg never happened. They must realise the South Africans are desperate to ensure that they qualify for the U-20 World Cup and not us, just as they (South Africa) will represent Africa at the Olympics and not us. It’s all about the bragging rights.”

The Falconets scored their first goal of the match in the 27th minute through Grace Kanu while Patience Kalu netted the second goal in the 45th minute.

The South Africans responded by converting a penalty in added time through Gabriela Salgado for their consolation goal.
The return leg holds in two weeks.

Ghana/Ethiopia: Ethiopian U20 Women to Face Ghana in World Cup Qualifier
By Dawit Tolesa

Ethiopian U20 national women team will host Ghana in third round 2015 CAF U20 Women's World Cup qualifying tournament today at the Addis Ababa Stadium.

The Ethiopian U20 women national team set up the encounter with Ghana after knocking Burkina Faso out of the qualifiers after a goalless draw in Addis Ababa last week - Ethiopia advancing with an aggregate result of 2-0.

Ghana is now the only team standing between Ethiopia and the Women U20 World Cup finals which will be hosted in Papua New Guinea from 28 October to 16 November 2016. The team that comes out on top after the two-legged matches will represent the continent alongside the host nation. If the Ethiopian U20 women national team beat Ghana, they will make history by becoming the first women Ethiopian team to do so.

The Ethiopian side will be without midfielder Tigist Yadeta, who is mourning the loss of her father, for the match against Ghana.

Fatigue and lack of experience remains a concern for the Ethiopian coach.
"We have played three matches in 13 days. And we know our rival Ghana national team have a better experience than us in participating in tournaments including World Cup tournaments," Asrat Abate, told The Reporter.

"But, we will try our best to win the match. All players are ready for this match and I hope we will win," Asrat added.

In recognition to their achievements, the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has awarded prize money for the squad and the coaching staff.

But the immediate task ahead will not be an easy one for the Ethiopian team. Ghana U20 women national team defeated Senegal 8-0 on aggregate in the first round qualifier match and Equatorial Guinea 3-0 on aggregate in the second round.

Ghana took part in the 2014 FIFA U20 World Cup tournament held in Canada. They were placed in group with Germany, the US and China, who between them can look back at 12 semi-final appearances in the six finals.
Three defeats later, the Black Princesses were on their way home.

At Germany 2010, Ghana was also drawn into a group with the US. The West Africans managed a credible 1-1 draw against the defending champions, but lost against a strong South Korea side.

They secured their first victory at the U-20 finals in their last group game, beating Switzerland 2-0, but it was not enough to advance to the knockout stage.

They still have an experienced side, as many of their players were involved in the U-17 finals in Azerbaijan two years ago, where Ghana finished third, and in previous U-20 finals.

No World Cup worries for Falconets

Falconets prolific striker, Chinwendu Ihezuo has said there is no cause for alarm following the side’s slim win against the Basetsana of South Africa.

The nation’s campaigners won 2-1 against the South Africans in Saturday’s 2016 Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup Africa final round first fixture qualifying clash at the Abuja National Stadium.

Ihezuo said her side are on strong footing towards qualifying for the World Cup in Papua New Guinea despite the low margin 2-1 win.

CELEBRATION: Falconets : FIFA.

“Of course, there is no cause for alarm as far as qualification for the 2016 Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea is concerned.

“We missed lots of scoring chances in the first fixture but the good thing is that we ended up the winners.
“We need to work hard on our finishing to stand a good chance in the reverse fixture in South Africa.

“Once we are able to put up more efforts in our games we will have it quite easy right there in Johannesburg.

“Our chance for a spot at the World Cup is quite bright as the South Africans were not spectacular.”

“They were a bit lucky with the penalty but we will certainly beat them right there at their backyard to earn the World Cup ticket,” said the Delta Queens goal machine.

The decisive fixture holds in a fortnight at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa outside Johannesburg.

Hamilton: Falcons Need Ex-Female Int’l, Not Foreign Coach

In this exclusive interview with Completesportsnigeri a.com's IZUCHUKWU OKOSI, former Super Falcons coach, Paul Hamilton, insists that Nigerian coaches, especially ex-female internationals, are best suited to take charge of the Nigeria women national team, and strongly condemns the talks about hiring of a foreign coach by some Nigerian football enthusiasts. 'The Wonder B' also speaks about Asisat Oshoala's great future prospects and the Super Falconets' 2016 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup ambition.

Nigeria's U20 women's team on Saturday defeated South Africa 2-1 in the FIFA U20 World Cup qualifiers to set up an intriguing second leg in Johannesbourg.

What do you think coach Peter Dedevbo must do to avoid an upset?

The Falconets must realise that the 2-1 victory is not a comfortable one. So as much as its good to score more goals, they must also be disciplined defensively. We know there are no more minnows in the game, so every team must be taken seriously.

South Africa are desperately looking forward to qualifying for the U20 Women's World Cup at the expense of Nigeria after clinching the only African ticket to the women's football event of the 2016 Olympics. Would you say there's a power shift now in women's football in the continent?

Nigeria remains the best African team in women football but other countries are fast catching up. I mean, its odd that Nigeria's Super Falcons will not represent Africa at the Olympics in Rio, but South Africa, not even Ghana.

The women's league in Nigeria need private sector involvement and more support from the government and the football federation. There are so many talented female players in this country but these ladies are not adequately appreciated for the glory they bring to Nigeria at continental and youth tournaments.

The Nigeria Football Federation are expected to appoint a coach for the Super Falcons. What should constitute the criteria for the appointment of the new coach?

Interest in women's football basically. Any coach the Nigeria Football Federation are going for must have a sound background in women's football because it's a different ball game. It's not easy to coach these girls.

There has been calls by some sections of football fans to have a foreign coach for the Falcons. Is this a step in the right direction?

I'm not in support of the NFF hiring a foreign coach for the Super Falcons. Nigerian coaches are better equipped to handle our teams now. Most of the countries that dominate in women's football do not hire foreign coaches. It's not something we should support, especially for the female teams.

Are there specific Nigerian coaches you feel are best qualified for the Super Falcons' job?

(Laughter) No. I will not recommend coaches to the NFF because we have so many good options. I'm a father figure to these young ones, so I cannot suggest any name. However, from our former internationals, we can get a good coach for the Falcons.

Would you recommend that female coaches only take charge of female teams as is the case in most countries that are world powers in women's football?

It doesn't necessarily mean that women must coach the female teams though it has some advantages because they understand each other better with women's issues, beyond working on the pitch or in trainings. But it's important that if a man must coach the women teams, he must be a man with self discipline, who must not take advantage of the girls. We do not want to read stories of female players saying they were sexually harassed. The male coaches must be of good morals.

The Super Falcons did not have a good World Cup outing in Canada this year and Edwin Okon was relieved of his job, but should FAs change coaches at will after a bad tournament?

It depends on circumstances. If a team played well but were just unlucky to score goals, you could understand. If it's bad officiating and it's glaring for everyone to see, that also is understandable.
But a bad performance cannot be defended. The camp must also be devoid of controversies.

Coaches are not just coaches in that sense, but managers of resources who must balance the art of imparting knowledge and being leaders on and off the pitch.

I feel the Falcons were unlucky at the World Cup. Okon might have fared better at the All Africa Games.

Coach Dedevbo Not Satisfied With Falconets Result

Nigeria’s Falconets coach, Peter Dedevbo, is not satisfied with the 2-1 victory over the Basetsana of South Africa in the first leg of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Falconets goals came in the first half, while the visitors reduced the deficit through the penalty spot at extra time.

Coach Dedevbo believes the team could have perform better in the second half, but failed to increase the lead and make the second leg a formality.

He, however, insisted that the girls could get the desired result at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa, outside Johannesburg on November 7 and qualify for the tournament in Papua, New Guinea in 2016

Peter Dedevbo not blaming defenders for S/Africa’s crucial away goal
Posted By: Adeniyi

Falconets Coach, Peter Dedevbo insists the team will be prepared for South Africa.

Peter Dedevbo will not blame his defenders for conceding a late penalty against South Africa’s Basetsana in the final round of their 2016 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying match in Abuja.

Though the Falconets won 2-1 courtesy goals from in-form Chiwendu Ihezuo (30) and Uchenna Kanu (45); giving Nigeria a slim edge, heading into a crucial second leg on 6th November Dedevbo says the team will focus on working on their lapses.

Speaking with www.footballlive.ng the coach; who won silver with the team in Canada insists their is confidence in camp and real belief that they can get the desired result.

Nigeria finished as runner up at the last edition of the World Cup in Canada and now face a steep task to return to the Copa mundial.

Basetsana back in camp for qualifier

The South African under-20 women’s national team, Basetsana, is back in camp for the second leg of the final round qualifier for the 2016 Papua New Guinea Fifa Women’s Under-20 World Cup match against Nigeria on Sunday at Makhulong Stadium.

Basetsana lost 2-1 to the Falconets of Nigeria just over a week ago at the National Stadium Abuja in Nigeria.

South Africa started camp on Monday.
Striker Anelisa Ndyebi has been left out as she is sitting for exams in Port Elizabeth.
“We have some players in camp who are busy with exams so there is a lot of movement in and out of camp but we have to deal with it.

We have devised a plan for the players to be able to focus on the two tasks at hand and so far they are coping well,” said Basetsana head coach Elisabeth Migchelsen.
“We are happy that we are back in camp and all the players are fit.

We travelled with only 17 players to Nigeria for the first leg due to reasons beyond our control and we are glad that all the players are available for selection on Sunday,” added Migchelsen.

“We managed to get a crucial away goal in Nigeria, however we should not underestimate them.

We know their strengths, what they are capable of but we need to focus on our own team and where we need to improve from the first leg and we are confident of getting a good result on Sunday.”

The South Africans are holding their training sessions at the Modder Sports Complex in Modderfontein.

The winner will qualify for the 2016 Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

Dedevbo calls for WCQ calm
By: Humphrey Njoku

Falconets head coach, Peter Dedevbo has called for calm as his wards battle the Basetsana of South Africa for a spot at the 2016 Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea.

The Nigerian campaigners will be taking their 2-1 first leg advantage at the Abuja National Stadium to Johannesburg for the decisive leg on Saturday at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa.

Dedevbo said the side need the prayer and support of all and sundry to overcome the hurdle of the South Africans.
“Nigerians should stop to express apprehension over the decisive clash against South Africa but to pray to God to give us victory in Johannesburg.

“The South Africans were not too fantastic but were just lucky to earn the away goal from the spot.
“We have perfectly done our home work as well as corrected the shortcomings that saw us missed chances in the first leg in Abuja.

“The South Africans were largely defensive here in Abuja but over there in Johannesburg they are most likely to come out in search of the winning goal so it will suit us well to apply the killer punch.

“The encounter is mostly going to be tough but we are confident to nip the World Cup ticket at their expense,” said the former Flamingoes head coach to supersport.com.

The aggregate winners will secure one of the African tickets for the global biennial football showpiece in Papua New Guinea.

Falconets were runners-up in the immediate past championship in Canada.

Falconets to play Basetsana on Sunday

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African final qualifying match between Nigeria’s Falconets and the Basetsana of South Africa will now take place in South Africa on Sunday.

Earlier slated for Saturday, the match has been moved at the instance of the South African Football Association, but the venue still remains the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa (outside Johannesburg), and the match will still kick off at 3pm.

NFF Executive Committee member Ibrahim Musa Gusau, who is also Chairman of Chairmen, will lead the delegation that will be made up of 18 players and 10 technical/backroom staff.

Falconets’ Head Coach, Peter Dedevbo, said on Wednesday that his girls are ready for the big battle, with the fixture delicately poised at 2-1 in favour of Nigeria.

“We wanted to win big in the first leg, but it didn’t happen. Sunday is another day to look for a big win.
The fact that we are playing away from home matters little to us.

“Papua New Guinea is a destination for the Falconets next year. Nigeria has never missed any FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and we will not start now.”

Chinwendu Ihezuo scored after the half –hour to put Nigeria ahead and the Falconets then benefitted from an own goal by a Basetsana defender in the first leg.

However, a late penalty handed Basetsana a crucial away goal.
Dedevbo added: “We will play with our hearts, with confidence and discipline. We have forgotten entirely about the first leg result, because we know we have to win in South Africa.”

W/Cup Qualifier: Falode tips Falconets to beat S/Africa

National Women’s teams Co-ordinator and Chairperson of Edo Queens of Benin City, Aisha Falode, has said she is sure that the national U-20 Women’s national team, other wise known as the Super Falconets, which narrowly lost the last World Cup final to Germany, has the capacity not only to qualify for the next World Cup but go all the way and win the trophy.

We will fight to the end – Basetsana

Thembi Kgatlana © Gallo Images

Basetsana have vowed to fight to the end in the second leg of the third and final round of the Under-20 Fifa Women’s World Cup, Papua New Guinea 2016 qualifier against Nigeria.

The two nations meet on Sunday, 8 November at the Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa in a do or die affair.
Kick-off is at 3pm and entry is free.

Nigeria have a 2-1 lead from the first leg played in Abuja two weeks ago.
Both countries will have their final training sessions at the match venue on Saturday, 7 November.

The Falconets will go first at 3pm followed by the hosts at 4.15pm.
Safa Media spoke to Basetsana forward Thembi Kgatlana ahead of this all-important match.

Matlhomola Morake: It’s the big one against Nigeria on Sunday - how do you see it?

Thembi Kgatlana: Like you say, it’s the big one, and a lot of people are expecting big things from us and you know it’s not possible to take on a big hurdle without being ready for it. We have played Nigeria before and we know what to expect, but as a team we need to focus on our game and know what we capable of.

MM: How confident is the team ahead of Sunday?
TK: I missed the first leg when we went to Nigeria and came back with a loss, but the good thing is that we scored a crucial away goal. Now we need to be disciplined and focused to reverse the result. We have been working hard and this is what we really want. For us to qualify we have to work 95 minutes and give 200 percent on the day.

MM: How important is this match for Basetsana?
TK: We are on the verge of making history. We have a chance of helping this team qualify for the Under-20 Women’s World Cup for the first time ever. This could help see some changes in women’s football, and a lot of people could perhaps start investing in the sport. Maybe players could get contracts overseas as well. We have set ourselves a goal - this is what we want as a team, and I believe we will get that result.

MM: How important is this match to Thembi?
TK: Before Thembi comes the team. I need to first help the team qualify and I believe I will benefit in the process. Qualifying and being on the big stage will get me closer to achieving my dream of playing overseas as the doors will be starting to open not just for me but for the all the players.

MM: You play for Banyana Banyana and Basetsana, are the other players looking up to you for inspiration?
TK: Being in both teams is not easy because the levels are not the same. But what I can say is that football is a team sport. I cannot do it alone. We have to work as a team and ensure that we defeat Nigeria.

MM: Banyana Banyana have qualified for the Olympics. Is that some pressure for Basetsana to do well or does it serve as an inspiration?
TK: No, we are not under any pressure. We are two different sides. We have to focus on the job at hand and not feel pressure because Banyana Banyana are going to the Olympics. Instead we have to use that as motivation.

But we still have to work hard to achieve what we want. It’s a good thing that they have qualified before us. Now we can look up to them for inspiration. We have a good coach, a good technical team and a good group overall, so I believe we can do it.

MM: How happy were you when you heard Banyana Banyana qualified for the Olympics?
TK: I was at home and following the match on social media because it was not broadcast on television here at home. The network was not good on the day, and I missed the point when we scored, but when I realised we had scored, I jumped up and down with joy because it meant so much to me. Even though I was not there I was behind them all the way. When the goal came I knew that we were going to win and qualify because in the first leg Equatorial Guinea didn’t really trouble us. The girls fought hard in that match, and made history by defeating Equatorial Guinea in their backyard, the first team to do that in a very long time and I will always remember that.
