HUNGARIAN-DESIGNED TRAM BUILT IN ETHIOPIA ATTRACTS ATTENTION FROM NEIGHBOURING KENYA

A Hungarian-designed tram, built in cooperation between the Hungarian firm Dunai Repülőgépgyár Zrt. (DR) and an Ethiopian company in the African country, is attracting interest from the neighbouring Kenya, the Hungarian foreign ministry has disclosed.

DR, which is taking part in developing the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa’s public transport network, had participated in the production off a Hungarian-designed tram model, the ministry reports, adding that negotiations on the construction of a test track are currently under way.

The ministry added that the Hungarian company also supplied experts necessary for the coordination of production and the training of staff in Addis Ababa. Currently, discussions are under way with the state-owned Ethiopian company Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC) on the construction of a test track for the tram.


DR’s delegation has also engaged in talks with the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) on the financing of the project, which is ready to provide funds necessary for the construction of the test track. The Hungarian Eximbank has offered a loan framework for the CBE, which it could deploy for future agreements between DR and METEC.

According to Hungary’s embassy in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, there is great interest in the Ethiopian streetcar project in the country, and the embassy has begun establishing contact concerning the issue.

Which other freedom do we need to produce this?... Innoson is already doing something similar. Give us power supply, give us reasonable governors/leaders in the southeast and give us a functional sea-port and you will see things like this being actualised easily.
