Re: Africans And Western Names by Nobody: 9:27pm On Feb 25, 2009 |
KB1: Africans have at least two names: native and western. People close to me call me by my native name while others call me by my English name. @ KB1 Why do you find excuses to criticize Africa all the time? Don't you realize that this topic hasn't even got enough evidence to exist? How many Africans born in Africa have you seen bearing just western names? You have a serious comlex dude. |

KB1: You know you are quite silly. I think you are just trying to rack up your threads, otherwise there is no justification for opening a nonsensical thread like this. I don't think your childishness is worth the reply. |

Whatever. Some Africans tend to have Biblical names, Gabriel, John, Andrew, Peter, Michael. They are not typically randomly called Ryan, Jamie, Laura, etc. My husband has both a biblical and a Nigerian name. My kids might have the same. |

KB1: Africans have both (colonization is a factor for that). 2% out 100% Africans uses their english name. Don't use Nollywood to base that facts on. Most Africans uses their African name, most Africans name their children in African name. Like me, i have both. I use my african name when i'm around other Africans but when i'm around foreigners and they can't pronounce my African name, i use my English name. Like someone said before most foreign name Africans use are biblical or islamic. Not your everyday names such as tyrone or edward, etc |

I still go by my African Name. Adedayo or Dayo Though some Oyinbos would be like Day-o but I dont mind. I would prefer that to being called Randy or Shaniqua which is meaningless |
Re: Africans And Western Names by chiogo(f): 8:31pm On Feb 28, 2009 |
Ok, Mr. poster, Most Africans who bear english names have biblical names such as Mary, Samuel, David, etc, last time I checked white people didn't write the bible. And the others with english but not biblical names have names such as blessing, mercy, etc. Those are not western names. Western names are Brian, Jason, Brtiney, etc. Get it right. On a personal note, I have no western or english name whatsoever! so what's up? |

Re: Africans And Western Names by Nobody: 10:00pm On Feb 28, 2009 |
romeo:Like a typical Naija man, you're too stubborn to yield to simple correction. African Americans do not like being called Africans, infact, they'd rather be called black than Africans. Things have changed, decades have changed their mindsets. They know nothing about africa rather than what they read/ hear. Africans in America are different than African Americans. Our values and behaviors are different. Unless an African man tries to do anything to become an African American. You'd rarely see Nigerians conversing about the slavery days and how the sense of inferiority has affected the motivation of black children to learn. |

Re: Africans And Western Names by kliva6(f): 9:08am On Jul 09, 2009 |
half of the names(if not all) that are being called western have other roots that are far from being western. americans themselves don't really have thier own names except for the ones answered by the natives there. 2 tell d truth names like "omari" and "latoya" have african roots themselves. no wahala. name na name. |
