Three wishes

A tale from Hungary

Once upon a time there was a very poor young man who lived happily with his wife in a small cottage. They had no children but they loved each other dearly.

One day when the young woman came back from the farm and wanted to cook supper, she found that her kitchen was empty; there was nothing to cook. She put wafer to boil on the fire and then started to think about their life together. They both worked and worked so hard but still there was nothing for them to eat.

As she was thinking, she heard a noise behind her and turned around. She saw a beautiful, well dressed lady. A fairy.

“I will help you, young lady,” the fairy said, “You can have three wishes and I will fulfill them for you. But think we’ll before you wish”. Then the fairy disappeared.

The young woman was even more surprised; she could not believe her luck. She wished for a big long sausage for supper. As she wished, a big long sausage in a pit appeared through the winds and started to cook over the fire. It smelled delicious.

Soon, her husband came back from work. He was wondering how they came to have such a sweet-smelling supper cooking on the fire, so his wife told him the story of the fairy and three wishes. They began planning for their other two wishes. They wondered if they should wish for a bigger house, or more animals for their farm. They were very excited.

Then the young man, being hungry, wanted to taste the sausage. He reached into the pot, but it fell from her fire and the sausage rolled onto the ground. The young woman was annoyed and said,

“Clumsy, I wish that sausage was attached to your nose!”

And at once, the big long sausage jumped from the ground and attached itself very firmly to the man’s nose. First, the wife tried to pull on the sausage but it wouldn’t come off. She tried a knife, but it was not sharp enough. She tried the axe they used to cut wood, but it she still wasn’t able to remove the sausage from her husband’s nose.

They now had to decide whether to wish for the house, animals for their barn or to wish for the sausage to come off the young man’s nose. He could not really go on forever with a long nose like that, everyone would laugh at him, so finally they decided to wish the sausage back into the pot. Their wish came true and they continued cooking for supper.

The fairy never came back again and they remained poor forever.

One good thing came out of that day, they never quarrelled again.
