A solar charge controller simply ensures that your solar panel(s) does not fry (overcharge) your batteries by letting you know when the battery is fully charged. Deep cycle batteries are generally susceptible to damage when you overcharge them. if properly maintained (charging it as it should and removing it as soon as its fully charged) could last you up to 6years. however, they barely last up to a year if this rule of thumb is not followed.
