WHEN IMPATIENCE REPLACES CHANGE by Gbemisola Saraki Nigeria chose #change as the vista to a fresh lease of our national life. But the change we need isn’t so much an issue now as our impatience to follow through the process of that change. Unfortunately, the pattern of our impatience doesn’t rest on a practical vision of development to see our nation working per se but the culture of rebuilding the power peddling as a symbol of new found political authority and relevance. And I would explain. May 29th, when President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn-in, is less than a month ago and while government has found a new gusto (and there is evidence of improvement in security, electricity, fuel and an abating impunity), many Nigerians are rather concerned about the appointment of ministers and political office holders of Mr. President's government. The agitating question now is rather about when and who PMB would elect as his Chief of Staff than they are about what steps he has taken toward fresh lease of our national life in the last three weeks. To me the impatience seems to be more premised on seeing new appointments as a strategy of lobbying the next set of political office holders than about the actual change that is driving the vision. Without appointments, there is an obvious limitation on the outlets of political and contract lobbying and peddling. So, we are basically having this disturbing cacophony of irrelevant agitations for selfish reasons rather than a holistic articulation of change as a new lease of our national life. Government is working, question is, are we? YES for those in the private sector are going about their business; NO for those in the public sector!! We,the political class (and that includes all potential beneficiaries, namely we the actual politicians, those who want to be our PA's, SA's, Orderlies, ADC's, media aides, pastors, imams, soothsayers, good boys, supporters, sycophants, etc) are the ones screaming at the top of our voices about PMB not moving. Less than 30 days of taking office - and we are not talking about a newly appointed Managing Director of a Bank, we are talking about the Chief Executive of the Country for crying out loud!!! PMB must do the right thing, not the fastest thing. Thoroughness is needed in a rescue mission. 2007 days of reckless government and 25 days of deliberate repair. But that isn’t all. In every government, the civil service is an assemblage of technocrats that drives policies of the government and their implementations. The civil service is the engine room of any and every government, or rather, should be. The political class simply provides road maps and pragmatic leadership imperative to power the visions for a practical and time-bound development. In other words, technocrats are the civil servants, and the political class isn’t a replacement for the technocratic requisite of the civil service; the competence and visions of political leadership are simply to optimize the civil service to deliver on the technocratic expectations as the engine room of government. The last three weeks of PMB’s leadership has rightly shown that indeed civil servants can be what a leader envisions and configures their roles to be. Permanent secretaries in various ministries have been holding forth and their technocratic competences have been stabilizing the visions of PMB such that even when substantive ministers are yet to be appointed, governance isn’t hindered and government is in full throttle. Let’s be honest with ourselves amount ourselves, we need to articulate our demands and expectations from this new administration in order to fit change as our mantra of a new Nigeria. Our impatience is simply ignited not by the necessity for a new Nigeria but our detention by the culture of our political past. Until we live change in our individual lives, change in our national life would only be a mirage. That’s why our impatience must rest on the vision of change in our national development rather than the noise of when and who the next ministers would be. We should decide - what does Nigeria need? Functioning government or fast moving politicians? Pace is always greater than speed. We chose President Muhammadu Buhari for his integrity and unassailable patriotism, let’s give him that chance to prove the reasons we chose him as our President. 5 Likes |

Miracleojo: Don't mind that family of theirs, all they are known to benefit from is politicking... I'm pro PMB but no one asked for her opinion, was it not a week before election that she defected because she took a 100 supporters to Mama Piss campaign in kwara & was given 50k for logistics for all them.. The amount totally infuriated her coupled with the momument of PMB! She didn't want to be caught napping!!! |

bettercreature: This is too funny!!! It is purely a figment of your imagination. Gbemi used as what?? They were enstranged for close to 4years (didn't even speak at their father's funeral) till the entire ilorin emirate brokered peace... She left PDP cos she saw like every sane person did that there was no future for the party at the centre, there was no machination!! It was purely for political expediency. |

This is the real thing. It's only the political gamblers that are making noise about no ministers. Government is running. Policy is being formulated. Things are getting better slowly and steadily. CHANGE IS HERE. PARTS OF THE CHANGE IS WHAT WE ARE SEEING IN THAT THE PRESIDENT CHOSES TO WORK WITH CIVIL SERVANTS TO KICK START HIS GOVERNMENT. |
