President Muhammadu Buhari last night met
with former Minority Leader of the House of
Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and
members of his group, during which they asked
for protection owing to their loyalty to their
party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gbajabiamila and his supporters in the House
have been at loggerheads Hon. Yakubu Dogara
since the latter defied the APC to emerge
Speaker of the lower legislative chamber.
Gbajabiamila led a 30-man strong delegation,
which included Hon. Mohammed Monguno who
was defeated in the race for the post of Deputy
Speaker of the House by Hon. Yusuff Lasun.
Senator Ahmed Lawan and Gbajabiamila had
been picked by the ruling APC as the
candidates for the Senate presidency and
speakership of the House but lost the elections
to Senator Bukola Saraki and Dogara,
respectively, who got the backing of lawmakers
of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) in the leadership race.
Senator Abu Ibrahim, representing Katsina South
senatorial district, was the only senator in the
delegation last night.
They arrived at the first lady’s wing of the
Presidential Villa, venue of the meeting, at
9.30p.m. and were joined by Buhari at 9.45p.m.
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was also at the
meeting.
The meeting was called to explore ways to
resolve the ongoing leadership crisis in the
House and was the second one held by Buhari
in recent days with National Assembly
lawmakers.
He was reported to have met Senator Lawan
and his supporters a few days ago.
However, he has studiously avoided any
meetings with Saraki and Dogara who went
against the wishes of the party to emerge
principal officers of the National Assembly.
A presidency source informed THISDAY that
Gbajabiamila informed the president that they
had been loyal to the party and yet had lost out
in the leadership contest.
They therefore solicited his support for
protection as reward for their loyalty to APC.
In response, Buhari was said to have assured
them that the issues they had raised would be
addressed at the meeting of the National
Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC
scheduled for Friday.
He told them that the issue of party supremacy
would again be tabled at the meeting with a
view to ensuring that the outstanding principal
positions in the House are secured by the
candidates nominated by the APC.
Following his loss to Dogara, APC had in a letter
to the Speaker, forwarded Gbajabiamila’s name
to emerge Majority Leader of the House.
Other nominees of the party included Hon. Ado
Doguwa (North-West) as Deputy House Leader;
Mohammed Monguno (North-East) as Chief
Whip; and Pally Iriiase as Deputy Chief Whip.
Last night’s meeting with Gbajabiamila and
other APC House members was still ongoing at
the time of this report.
