A LOYALIST of former President Goodluck
Jonathan , Monovie Ogbara , has thrown
has joined the coming governorship
election in the Bayelsa State on the
platform of the Peoples Democratic Party
( PDP ) .
Ogbara was the chairman of the Bayelsa
State Local Government Service
Commission when Jonathan was the state
governor .
He hails from Famgbe in Epie -Atissa clan
of Yenagoa Local Government Area ,
Bayelsa Central Senatorial District.
He declared his intention to run for
governorship on Wednesday July 1, 2015
at an emergency meeting of the Atissa
Council of Chiefs , which held at the
palace of the monarch of Atissa Kingdom
in Obogoro , near Yenagoa, the state
capital .
Ogbara’ s entry into the race has increased
the stakes ahead of the election as the
people of Bayelsa Central are clamouring
that it is their turn to produce the next
governor of the state.
Governor , Seriake Dickson , who is seeking
a second term , is from Toru Orua in
Sagbama Local Government Area , Bayelsa
West .
Ogbara, a retired director of the National
Population Commission ( NPC) , told the
chiefs and elders that the declaration of
intent was his first step towards
contesting for the governorship .
“ This is in line with the tradition of Atissa
Kingdom that a kinsman should inform his
people first and get their support before
engaging in traditional wrestling or
extended battle ” , he said .
He said he was going into the
governorship race to improve the socio-
economic condition of the people ,
stressing that “ inept leadership , corruption
and lack of creativity and vision have
taken Bayelsa backwards over the years . ”
He said the people deserved a better deal
in governance that would bring about
physical infrastructure development and
provision of social basic amenities, which
he noted, had been out of the reach of
the people.
Ogbara also said that he would on July
25, 2015 declare his governorship ambition
to a wider Bayelsa audience and called on
the people of the state to choose wisely
this time around .
