Finally I was able to setup my own small inverter with less than 50k. Here is the summary
1. LifePo4 black battery N10,000
2. 500w car inverter N7000
3. Pmw 20A solar controller N4000
4. 80w poly solar panel N17500
5. Cable for connection N1000
Total= N39500
I use this setup to power 20inch HP monitor, gotv, small USB fan and charge my phone. The main challenge I am facing now is the solar doesn't charge the battery fast. I have to wait till 11am when the battery current reaches 11v before I can ON the setup to watch the gotv. Gurus in the house pls how can I make it charge fast?

As soon as as I saw your list, even before reading your question, I suspected you'll have problems with charging.

1. What is the rating/capacity of your battery? you did not provide this information. From my guess it isn't less than 40AH. As a rule, always make sure the wattage of your solar panel is the right one for your battery else it will take longer to charge. A fast calculation for me will be to multiply the battery power by 2.5: i.e if you are using battery power of 100AH make sure your solar power is not less than 250watt. If you are using 40AH, make sure your solar is 100watt. A more detailed calculation is:

If you check the back of your panel, you'll notice that for every 20watt of solar panel, you can get 1Amp of current. for example,
20 watt solar panel = 1Amp current
40watt solar panel = 2 Amp current
60watt solar panel = 3 Amp current
80watt solar panel = 4 Amp current
100watt solar panel = 5 Amp current etc.

In Nigeria, we are blessed with up to 7hour sunlight daily. This means that your 80watt solar panel can deliver 4Amp X 7hours = 28AmpHours also written as 28AH. Now lets suppose you use a battery rated 28AH, this will take you one single day to get it fully charged since your solar panel can deliver this in one day. Again if your battery is rated 56AH, this will take you 2 days etc.

So, in your case, to get your battery fully charged in one day, simply INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SOLAR PANELS.

I'm sure your question now is: How many more solar panels do I need to buy?

Answer= Divide your battery AH rating by 28AH, approximate it to the nearest whole number and minus 1 (since you already have 1)

e.g If you use 100AH, calculate thus: 100AH/28AH = 3.57, i.e approximate = 4solar panels -1= 3 additional solar panels (each rated 80watt)

Go to Alaba market and buy 3 more 80watt solar panels grin
Sit back and enjoy daily constant uninterrupted power supply.

I don't think your charge controller can fully charge your battery coz the charging voltage for your type of battery is 17v & the maximum voltage a pwm charge controller can supply is 14v to 14.5 v, your type of battery voltage is 16v when fully charged.

Anyway, using your battery below 12v is not advisable, you are sending your battery to it's early grave,
I'm pretty sure your battery won't last up to 6 month!
thank you for the info. Here is the set up. Sorry there's no ladder for me to climb the roof for now to snap the solar panel

Thanks for the thorough analysis sir. Since the battery is 40AH and going with your calculation, I need 100w panel, what if I add another 80w to the 80w I am currently using?

That will be perfect and will give you a daily full dose of charging. But if you want to be economical you could simply go for a 4owatt panel and save yourself some money. No qualms if you can afford another 80w panel

Make sure that your panels are facing north direction. Your wires coming from the panels look so thin. Make sure they are not less than 2.5mm or use 4mm (so you dont lose current due to high resistance thin wires).

I like you solar charge controller. Where did you get them for N4K. I don't mind buying from the person as I intend fixing mine next week hopefully.

Good day all my fellow achievers and goal getters.

My setup is NOT the most expensive. 2, 40ah lifepo4 battery and 100ah deepcycle battery. I use a 650va ups for this setup. Pls I plan to buy a 1000watt inverter. Pls is it true that the ups consumes and waste too much power. Making an inverter more efficient.

Is the inverter more efficient.

Pls what capacity of battery, charge controller and inverter do I need for a 60w solar panel? Will the specified system be able to power a laptop?

aluku5:

Pls what capacity of battery, charge controller and inverter do I need for a 60w solar panel? Will the specified system be able to power a laptop?

60W solar panel is quite little, but here is what I'll recommend: A little calculation to get the answer you seek.

(Some people believe you can get 7hours sunlight in Nigeria, but to be on the safe side in calculating, I'll rather use a 5hour benchmark)

Your panel can deliver = 60watt X 5hours average sunlight hours , i.e 300watthours

However, the panels are not 100% efficient and will lose some energy just as your PWM Solar charge controller is not 100% efficient. In most cases, they both deliver just about 60% of the panel capacity.

So you can, in reality, only have 60% of 300watthours = 180watthours

So, get a battery with 180watthours.

To get the value of this battery, divide by 12volts, i.e180watthours/12volts = 15Ah

In essence, you can get a 12volts 15Ah battery.

There are no 12volts 15Ah batteries, but you can get 12volts 7.5Ah batteries (the type usually seen in UPS)

So get 2 of them and connect them in series to give you 12volts 15Ah

You solar panel can confidently charge this batteries to 100% daily. I think this can power your laptops rated 65watt for about 3 hours. So, it's really a very small power bank that can't really do much for you. They will do better with lighting up you one-room self contain with say, 3 of 5watt bulbs and a 12watt fan for about 6hours daily.
