I am not a fan of ex-President Obasanjo as if it is even necessary to state that fact. The man has his friends and this is the appropriate time for him to distinguish the friends of Olusegun Obasanjo from the friends of the eight-year tenured President Olusegun Obasanjo. Since May 29, the flood of criticisms of his major policies, especially in the last eighteen months burst with such force that Obasanjo had to leave Nigeria for holidays in Jamaica, West Indies.

Curiously, nobody has thought it fit among Obasanjo’s friends, beneficiaries or collaborators, to come to his aid. The attitude seems to be that if he can drown, so let him be. There may be a limit to any anger with Obasanjo’s friends in this category. At least, they are keeping quiet or disowning him tactfully only in private discussions.

What then can be said of one of Obasanjo’s supposed friends who chose a large Christian faithful gathering in Texas, United States to reveal rather falsely that in the fatal tenure perpetuation bid, Obasanjo was all alone?
Enoch Adejare (henceforth Jare) Adeboye is the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, a religious group with millions of followers spread not only throughout Nigeria but across the Atlantic Ocean in Britain and United States. Adeboye does not dignify himself as a reverend, bishop or archbishop even though with his followers across at least three continents, he can easily claim any of the titles. Instead, Enoch Jare Adeboye is humble enough to be known as pastor.

However, for this humility, the Redeem zealots credit their pastor with unlimited capacity to tackle all human, economic, social, political, religious and even marital problems. The unmarried – male or female – are not left out as they rush to the fold with the self-presumed certainty to click a life marital partner. The slightest set-back in an office sends the victim, especially middle-ranking upwards – to the Redeem Camp seeking solace, all quite legitimate depending on the follower’s personal faith.

Only the United States competes with Nigeria in religion as the fastest growing economy. But the zealots counter this observation. According to them, the church must be maintained. In conventional churches and mosques, financial contributions are voluntary depending on ability and willingness to donate. But Nigerians have been brainwashed to part with one tenth of all their earnings – be it a monthly wage of seven thousand naira or contract of one hundred million naira.

Yet, this mandatory contribution does not deter the followers. More than that, Enoch Jare Adeboye, to his adherents, is like a modern day Jesus gifted with the power of miracles even for those in politics, commerce, industry and the professions. Among them is (or was) ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo whose status would confer on him special privilege, considering the penchant of the two men for globe-trotting.

Then of course, there was the case of an incumbent governor and a challenger, who on separate occasions in the run-up to the 2003 elections turned up at Enoch Adeboye’s camp for blessing. Did Adeboye predict defeat for one of the candidates? We would never know.
However, Enoch Jare Adeboye this week claimed glory for Obasanjo’s return to national leadership in 1999 and survival against impeachment moves in 2002. Perhaps so.

Today, the point of interest is what seems to be Adeboye’s guilty conscience (if he has any) in proceeding from his self-glorification far away in Texas, United States among his faithful to sacrifice, in the process, his supposed friend, Olusegun Obasanjo. Adeboye, was reported in a Lagos-based national newspaper to have disrobed Obasanjo on the third term controversy. Some very unkind cut.

When a friend is down and you cannot help him up, you do not kick him. But first, the report with full acknowledgement to The Guardian newspaper.
"All though the period a plot was being executed to amend the Nigerian constitution to allow a third term for elected executive officers, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, apparently avoided some clerics whose views on the matter, he feared might be contrary to his.

"One of such clerics is the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye who disclosed at the weekend in Dallas that Obasanjo avoided meeting with him as the third term plot was thickening.
"Adeboye, who has been in the U.S. in the last two weeks, rounded off the 11th annual convention of the church in North America on Saturday morning at the church’s Redemption Camp in Floyd, Texas. It was a historic occasion as the RCCG was holding its first convention in the U.S. on its own property, spanning over four hundred acres of land in Floyd.

"While speaking with several hundreds of his ministers in the U.S. and Canada last Thursday, Adeboye urged pastors in the church not to ever dabble in partisan politics but stay contented with prayerfully influencing the process leading to the emergence of political leaders in their communities. But he looks forward to members of the church emerging as political leaders even in the U.S.
"Briefly narrating his experience on the third term issue, Adeboye, who has assumed the stature of a leading preacher and religious leader in the U.S., did not mention Obasanjo by name.

"According to him, when our former president wanted to run for a third term, he avoided me throughout the period.
"Adeboye added that he was indeed friendly with Obasanjo and had assured him before he was elected in 1999 that he would be President.
"Also, when there was a plan to impeach Obasanjo during the first term, Adeboye said he told him (Obasanjo) he would even get a second term. But when the plot for the third term started, the former leader started to avoid him.
"The General Overseer of the RCCG worldwide added that Obasanjo avoided him because the former president knew he (Adeboye) had been silent on the third even though he (Adeboye) had earlier spoken that Obasanjo would be president and would also get a second term. ‘But I kept quiet on the third term,’ Adeboye started, hinting that Obasanjo knew very well that he (Adeboye) would not bless the idea of a third term against Nigeria’s constitution.

"The former President, Adeboye added, knew that the constitution limited the presidential terms to two, yet sought to extend it."
This report has been deliberately quoted comprehensively to show the motive, the unfairness and the hypocrisy involved. First, why was it necessary to choose Texas, United States to disown Obasanjo only after the third term attempt failed? If anything Enoch Jare Adeboye’s purpose was solely to solidify his status among his followers in Nigeria and abroad as omnipotent.

It is quite noticeable in the report quoted above that Adeboye claimed to have predicted Obasanjo’s return to office and re-election for second term. He even claimed to have foreseen the failure of the third term venture, which is a blatant lie as will be shown below. It would not be known if Obasanjo approached Adeboye or not to bless his third term. Success is everybody’s child while failure has no father.
Had Obasanjo succeeded in perpetuating himself in office, would Enoch Jare Adeboye not have claimed to have predicted such for Obasanjo especially among his Redeem followers?
While presenting medal to Nigeria’s former leading athlete, Innocent Egbunike at an All-African Games meet in Kenya, the then Kenya President Arap Moi, humorously but in public appreciation of the surprise of the Nigerian coming from behind to out-distance all his rivals for the first place, said the Nigerian (Innocent) was not as innocent as he appeared.

The same can be said of Enoch Jare Adeboye. Yoruba name Jare translates to Innocent. Accordingly, on a very serious note, Enoch Jare Adeboye is not as innocent as he appears. Among his faithful, he is what the Pope is to Catholics, except that the weekly sermon at the Vatican does not inconvenience Italians. Anybody who doubts this should try Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on both sides anytime the monthly assembly at the camp holds. There is ever a new catchy theme which sends followers from most parts of South-West rushing down as if the end of the world is imminent. In the process, other traveling Nigerians are always trapped in a gridlock, sometimes for up to twelve hours or even longer.

Only because adherents flock the expressway to go and listen to one man. The same Enoch Jare Adeboye. Even if Obasanjo avoided him on the third term issue, should he have publicly denied a supposed close friend? When third term issue nearly tore Nigeria into pieces, the religious leaders who disapproved so spoke publicly and today, have their names recorded in history. Again, among them were the Anthony Okogies, the Gbonigis, the Onaiyekans, the Chris Okoties, the Gabriel Osus, etc. Certainly Enoch Jare Adeboye was never, repeat NEVER, among them.

Instead, what was Enoch Jare Adeboye’s position at that time? It wasn’t so much his view which unquestionably is his constitutional right but his present denial of supporting Obasanjo’s third term. Here is a challenge for Enoch Jare Adeboye. He should release for the public, the clip of his interview on a Lagos-based television on the third term issue at that time.

When pointedly asked for his view, Enoch Jare Adeboye responded, "Democracy is alien to us in Africa. Before the white men came, we were ruled by kings. And once a king ascended the throne, nobody succeeded him until he died." There was no follow-up question either because the interviewer got confused, was overwhelmed, hypnotised or himself biased in favour of third term. Indeed, the impression created was that the interview was stage-managed for Adeboye to swing his followers’ support for third term.

It is also conceded that such religious leaders when prophesying occasionally either genuinely or pretend to fall into trance, in which case, we may excuse the Redeem leader. But for his own credibility, Enoch Adeboye should be fair to Obasanjo. If he cannot save the man, he should not join in roasting him.
And how could Adeboye admonish his pastors not to dabble in partisan politics when the same Adeboye confessed, okay claimed that he blessed Obasanjo for his first and second term in office? Was that not partisan politics by Enoch Jare Adeboye against those who contested against Obasanjo?
By the way, very disturbingly, these unconventional religious groups largely because of the huge economic/financial returns, not only flourish but continue to spring all over the place with various claims, all in exploitation of human problems. In Nigeria, hardly is a fire outbreak in an ordinary bungalow successfully put off. Where then is that mountain in Nigeria to activate any fire?
Christians all over the world believe Christ is coming back soon. Maybe. But has the man set up any embassy for that purpose especially in Nigeria? Why should the Nigerian armed forces allow any other group to compete with them in the air? Unless God so approves, no life can be redeemed or deepened or equated to four equal parts.

Genuine muslims say their key prayers not only on Fridays but also in designated mosques and as the Americans would say "NAT for" any fattening. Choosing Lagos-Ibadan Expressway specifically on Sundays, in addition to Fridays clearly evidences our monumental sins against God to be forgiven.

Going by the above comments, if democracy is alien to Africans, For God's sake what in this world is not alien to Africa? The car we drive, the airplane we board,Christianity and almost anything you can think of.I strongly and personally would advice Christians anywhere in the world to be actively involved in Politics. In the USA, christians are a very strong factor in determining who the President is gonna be.In australia most of there parliaments are christians and even there topmost parliamentarian is a minister of God.
For me have always adviced Christians in Nigeria to use there Head and not all that there pastors says.

@ dejiariyo,

I agree with you that Adeboye has dribbling skills. My own addition is that his is slightly less harmful than our dear old Maradona/IBB (International Busy Body) of June 12 fame.

Adeboye is fond of making three prong 'prophesies' (prophesies which are bound to come to pass because they could be interpreted in three possible ways) that are nothing more than stating the obvious. His prophesies are very unbiblical in purpose and delivery, when we note the prophesies of Elijah, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Jeremiah we simply know that Adeboye is merely taking many gullible and over zealous 'Christians' many of whom are superstitious and misguided for a ride.

Adeboye is also in support of proliferation of churches which leads to mindless nominal Christianity, we know that nominal Christianity with blatant disregard for devotion to goodwill and service to mankind is meaningless yet Adeboye fails to see the evil in this. It is all about the money and not the propagation of the gospel that Adeboye sees in the proliferation of churches. That explains why he introduced franchising of the RCCG brand thus making it the fastest growing holy business in the world.

Adeboye recently made some very false prophesies about the global financial meltdown. It was reported by the Guardian two weeks ago that he prophesised that people who pay their tithes regularly will overcome the global financial crisis. This prophesy is false because both tithe paying and non tithe paying Christians will overcome the economic crisis if they are sufficiently armed with enterprise and frugality.

In conclusion, I will not blame Adeboye for his misdemeanors, rather the army of followers who have given too much power to him. Their unwillingness to hold him accountable is the reason his has such potent dribbling skills.

@paulipopo

i understand what u mean,i just get angry when nigerians keep failing to see that this men of God are not what they seem to be or how can u call the following statements as prophecies

Political leaders have criticized Pastor E.A. Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) for his prophecies for 2007 released many months in advance. The prophecies have led to spontaneous eruptions of religious and ethnic disinterest, apathy, and inability-to-give-a-damn all over the country.

We have decided to publish a transcript of the controversial prophecies. This is the most respected man of God in Nigeria, and his words have never fallen to the ground. We all need to study these prophecies so we too can decide whether to zealously ignore them along with the thousands of others who have been mightily unimpressed by them.

1. “The Lord says that Nigeria will be the giant of Africa next year. During the year 2007, there is not going to be a single country throughout Africa with a population as great as ours. As long as we serve him faithfully and attend church regularly, the Lord says our children shall be as numerous as the sands on ten mountains. Crowd: “Amen!”

2. “Some fertile married women will deliver babies in 2007, while many children currently in primary six will gain admission into secondary schools. Many of you who are brilliant final year students in higher institutions will graduate with flying colors during 2007. Most engaged couples with weddings fixed for 2007 will get married!” Crowd: “Amen!”

3. “Daddy says that in the year 2007 there will be a dry season and a rainy season. For Christians, the dry season in January may dry up any puddles on their streets and the rainy season in August will bring them massive showers of water from heaven. Unbelievers will experience the scorching sun during the dry season and their children will be scared by thunder and lightening during the August rains.” Crowd: “Amen!”

4. “Something very bad - very very bad - is going to happen sometime in 2007. I can’t tell you what it is now, but baba says we need to pray to avert this great tragedy from our nation. He says those who dodge their tithes and offerings may be the ones hardest hit by this looming maliase. Nigeria needs to be very very afraid in this next year 2007!” Crowd: “Jesus!”

“Note: You will need to attend the Holy Ghost convention every month till the end of 2007 so we can cry to God and ask him to spare Nigeria from the tragedy, which I will explain to you in 2008 after it has happened.”

Any link to this story?

1) One-tenth is not a Nigerian thingy, its from the bible for all christians even muslims do something similar.

2) Bible encourage religious leaders to to support canal leaders hence Obasanjo-Adeboye friendship.

OBJ is never a member of RCCG though attends their programmes, he is a Baptist.

Anyone who knows OBJ well well will know that he's not a listening person.

Although i am a Christian and have had a lot to say against many statements given by Adeboye and some other 'Men of God', i can only conclude that regardless of what name we call these esteemed men of God, THEY ARE STILL HUMAN BEINGS. Being human beings makes them prone to the same cares and worries that we ourselves go through, worries about our future, families, finances, etc. They are prone to talk off point sometimes (who can really control the tongue), prone to self preservation, prone to the pleasures of power and fame etc.

Although Adeboye's relationship with Baba was/is questionable, he (Adeboye) as a mature man and human being may have made a mistake (whether he choses to admit it or not). His close relationship with OBJ may have been HIS own doing and not that of God. There are instances in the bible where God specifically told his prophets and servants not to do something, which they went ahead to do. That did not take away the fact that these dissobedient prophets or kings, were not God's children or servants? They still turned around to repent and God still accepted them.

Lastly, there is a part of the bible that states that 'Only the Lord knows those who are his'. Whether Daddy GO is doing God's work or not is not left to us to continually debate on. It is left to God to do whatever he wills with the GO. That said however, it is sometimes interesting to read people's views on these Men of God.

Afterall, did Jesus not ask his disciples, "who do people say i am?"

You provide a link to 2007 prophesies from some junk website www.naijarita.com and a former press secretary to IBB.

Since it is not you, so it is to whoever put that 2007 prophesy out there, the individual is of his father the devil, in who there is no truth. Just as the devil is a lier he is a lier. The below were the prophesies for 2007 and not that rubbish. Any reasonable man reading that so called prophesy should have asked questions.

Secondly please provide the link to the sun newspaper, well the credibility of the writer speaks for itself, a press secretary to IBB.

The credibility of the writer is in question, the prophesy is a lie, the basis of this thread is FALSE, so please can people do the honourable thing and retract their statements.

It is just a pity when God will judge every individual, others will not be there to witness it. You have no right to judge a Man of God. I am not saying he is infallable but that should be done by God. not from us. And as far as the prophesies are concerned, they come to fulfilment only to those that believe, cos God is not a man that should lie, and God has used him to bless many souls. So don't be jeolous of what God is doing through him, to him, and where he is taking him to.

adeboye to me is not a man of God, a man of God will not be going on trips worth 15,000 dollars while the church members are suffering in poverty,
a man of God wont be disturbing others cos he wanna praise God, go to lagos-ibadan express way on friday or sunday just make sure u get ur sleeping math cos they will make u sleep in the traffic for hrs, what sought of praise worshipping is that, why take a an express road to praise God

adeboye is a comedian see some of his stupid comments:

The plan of the enemy was, that there was to be a crash per day for 49 days, and you prayed and God intervened.

The statement above was made by one "man of God" whilst giving his annual prophecies for 2006. He said there would have been a plane crash in Nigeria per day for 49 days last year but for the prayers of members of his church. Meanwhile the man did not even foresee or prophesy a single one of the crashes last year --- only now in hindsight ,

A pastor is one who pastors people. Ie. Takes care of them. Like a shepherd takes care of Sheep. He feeds them and leads them right.

You can take the analogy too far and point out that after feeding and fattening his sheep the pastor will one day lead them to the slaughter.

However you have some pastors that would rather skip the fattening part and go straight to the slaughtering part.

@away4real:PROPHECY FOR NIGERIA

1. Coming Elections will be far more peaceful than expected but serious prayers will be needed afterwards
2. Economic recovery will continue
3. This year will mark the beginning of the end for a principal enemy of this nation
4. Major Anti-Christians will suffer private and personal mishaps
Now you claim these are the Authentic prophecies,Please tell me if you are still in this world or not?Everywhere in this,2007 election in Nigeria was declared the most corrupt election ever held in Nigeria.Even Yardua himself admitted the fact that 2007 election bedevilled with monumental fraud, corrution and electoral malpractises.
What you and members of RCCG or any other pastors who make unnecessary prophecies should tell your pastors is that, they should concentrate more effectively in the building of the body of christ and not making prophecies that, a corrupt political process would give birth to incorruptible political process.
