Sometimes by just taking a glance in the mirror we discover that there is a new wrinkle or age spot on the skin that hasn’t been there before. Of course our skin serve many purposes, and our facial skin stands at the forefront, hence it is so prone to damage. What causes our skin to age faster by the way?

1. Sun

Sun exposure is a major element and is more crucial than our chronological age to the appearance of age spots, wrinkles, reducing in skin elasticity and sagging skin. As a matter of fact about 70% of skin ageing circle depends on the amount of sunlight on the skin. Solar radiation induces termination of collagen fibers in our skin through oxidation process. The elastic collagen fibers become rigid and fragile and their basic structure is destroyed – a physical process called solar elastosis.
2. Smoking

It is not exact on how smoking causes early ageing of the facial skin. Theories include:

Heat from the cigarette directly burning the skin
Changes in the elastic fibres of the skin
Narrowing of blood vessels, which reduces blood supply to the skin and can cause changes in skin elastic fibres and loss of collagen
Reducing Vitamin A levels and moisture of the skin
3. dietary low in fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are major source of inhibitors to ageing in our daily nutrition. Exposure to sun, smoking and chronic diseases expose us to accelerated oxidation damages. Soluble dietary antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, etc found in fruits and vegetables reach the deeper skin layers and partly neutralize the oxidative damage associated with prolonged exposure to the sun. Also fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C are essential to the proper production of collagen.
4. Genetics

Our body has an inherent capability to develop enzymes that function as antioxidants, along with the capability to correct individual damage to DNA which is the genetic code present in all cells. These antioxidant enzymes produced in our body are responsible for the efficient repair of the damage to our genetic code that occurs with the aging cycle. However, the tendency to fix genetic damage and the amount of antioxidants our body generates naturally are inherent in our genome, so our parents also affect the degree of damage caused to our skin with the aging process.
5. Stress

Lengthy emotional stress causes increased release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These stress hormones fasten various ageing processes that include suppression of normal tissue, characteristic obesity of the face, along with osteoporotic processes that damage bone density and cause changes in bone structure.

6. Lack of sleep

In time of deep sleep, the pituitary gland in our brain releases growth hormone. Continuous night sleep is actually one of the few times in the day in which this growth hormone is secreted in adults, and this hormone has a great importance in keeping various body tissues and their renewal, including the skin tissue. Prolonged lack of sleep is clearly evident on the face and accelerates ageing, as well as causes many other pathological processes.

7. Alcohol

Excessive alcohol causes damage to the skin texture and colour and has influence on the eye sockets. Drinking a lot of alcohol can cause bulged eyes and face resulting from the accumulation of toxic breakdown products in the deeper skin layers and causes the appearance of capillaries and redness of the cheeks and on the nasal bridge.

8. Depression

Depression makes us physically older by accelerating the ageing process in our cells. Long feeling of sadness and hopelessness were found to cause shortening of telomeres – structures located in all the cells in our body that affect among other things on the life span of the cell. Research has it that serious physical health problems, abusive or uncaring relationships, chronic pain among others are caused by depression thereby speeding up the ageing process.
