This was a "Thuraya" satellite phone. It's not a GSM phone mind you. It doesn't need any mast to work. It simply hooks up to a satellite and its talk time.
Its designed for areas that are usually not covered by any network. Like on a plane, a ship on the high seas, on d moon, etc
I used it when I was a sailor on a worldwide tour.
