In Nigeria, Mercedes Benz and Volvo used to be vehicles exclusively for the super rich. That was decades ago. It is not that Mercedes has dropped from the top of premium car ladder. The auto manufacturer is still regarded as one of the top luxury car makers. But many automakers such Porsche, Bentley, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover and Lexus have really come up to upstage the auto king. Maybach Exelero, which is going for $8m (about N1.59bn) is considered the most expensive car in the world. It has so much to do with Mercedes-Benz. This whopping 8,000,000 dollar worth car really makes a statement with its sleek black exterior and its red and black carbon fiber finished interior. The colour black gives it a Gotham city like and futuristic feel. The manufacturer in an online report recalls that the Maybach’s high-performance show car “Exelero” was unveiled to the world for the first time in Berlin 2004. The 700-hp two-seater with a V-12 bi-turbo engine is a unique custom model produced for Fulda Reifenwerke, using the car as a reference vehicle for a newly developed generation of wide tyres. The German manufacturer of luxury cars built the unique model as a modern interpretation of its legendary streamlined sports car from the 1930s, thereby forging a link with the historical predecessor, which at that time was based on a powerful Maybach automobile (SW 38) and used by Fulda for tyre tests. The Exelero embodies the highest expression of the Maybach individualisation strategy of offering specific custom solutions on request. In initial tests on the high-speed track in Nardo (Italy), the unique vehicle reached a top speed of 351.45 km/h. Rap shouter and bling enthusiast, Birdman, was reported to have bought himself this one-off Maybach Exelero for $8m. Birdman, or Bryan Williams as his mum prefers, tweeted: ‘They got this new Maybach that I want that costs $8m. The rapper, who co-owns aptly named Cash Money Records, is worth over $100m and already has a Bugatti Veyron and Maybach Landaulet to keep his new/old Exelero company. Maybach Motorenbau, a German car manufacturer, was founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son.
In 1960, Maybach was acquired by Daimler-Benz and remains today as a luxury car brand of Mercedes- Benz that is owned by Daimler AG. Daimler currently produces an ultra luxury edition of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class under the Maybach brand. The company first built an experimental car in 1919, introduced as a production model two years later at the Berlin Motor Show. Between 1921 and 1940, the company produced a variety of opulent vehicles, now regarded as classics. The company also continued to build heavy-duty diesel engines for marine and rail purposes
