The world’s first malaria vaccine has received a green light from European drugs regulators who recommended it should be licensed for use in babies in Africa who are at risk of the mosquito-borne disease.

The shot, called RTS,S or Mosquirix, would be the first licensed human vaccine against a parasitic disease and could help prevent millions of cases of malaria in countries that use it.

The vaccine was developed by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline in partnership with the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative,

Recommendations for a drug licence made by the European Medicines Agency are normally endorsed by the European Commission within a couple of months.

Mosquirix, also part-funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will also now be assessed by the World Health Organisation, which has promised to give its guidance on when and where it should be used before the end of this year.

Malaria killed an estimated 584,000 people in 2013, the vast majority of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

More than 80 percent of malaria deaths are in children under the age of five.

Andrew Witty, GSK’s chief executive, said EMA’s positive recommendation was a further important step towards making the world’s first malaria vaccine available for young children.

“While RTS,S on its own is not the complete answer to malaria, its use alongside those interventions currently available such as bed nets and insecticides would provide a very meaningful contribution to controlling the impact of malaria on children in those African communities that need it the most,” he said in a statement.

Science and technology is the key to development. Africans would do well for themselves and posterity by investing in education.

By the white men as usual while we mentally LAZY but EQUALLY endowed black men wallow in self-hate, pity and whining.
Rather than place emphasis on education of all our children we celebrate those who deprive us as excellent such as a governor who scores 14% (2,000 public schools out of 14,000) in this pivotal sector.
SMH!!!

they are now producing medicine to help africans, at the first place they told us in the bible that sickness and diseases were meant for egyptians. that at the mention of the name of jesus that every sickness will be healed. blind will see, deaf will speak and the dumb will hear, lame will walk, and so on and so fort. they made sure that they milked our resources, they enriched their contries with african resources. they turned our sense of reasoning to believe that every sickness is from their satan and that all we need to do is to keep praying to their god for healing while they went back and were producing solutions for their own problem. today africa is in worst state. even when an african man picks up a phone and couldn't understand while such a small technology can perform such wonders, he will attribute it to idol or even he will say that it was those idols been taken from african by the white slave masters. until europeans stop taking medicine and also stop building rehabilitation centers for disabled ones and focus more on their Jesus for solution. then i will believe them. but for now, Africans need a brain not the one the slave masters and missionaries left us with

Good but i will advise that there should be individual test by the residual coutries that will be using it. They need to be convinced by themselves that the shots are what they are meant for.
