Delta to pay WAEC fees for students

ABOUT 28,326 students who enrolled for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and other examinations are to have their fees paid by Delta State government.

The Commissioner for Basic Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Uvoh-Gardner, said the state government has approved N219 million for the payment of the examination fees.

Uvoh-Gardner told journalists yesterday in Asaba, the state capital, that the money was a refund of the 2008/2009 May/June and June/July WAEC/NABTEB Senior Secondary School Examinations.

She said the ministry was compiling and clearing candidates who enrolled for the 2007/2008 SSCE, adding that since all of them had left school, caution must be exercised to avoid refunding such monies to the wrong persons.

The commissioner emphasised that with the taking over of the payment of the examination fees by the state government, all levies in respect of the affected examinations by school principals were now illegal.

"Let me use this opportunity to emphasise that since the government has taken over the payment of the aforementioned fees throughout the state, it has abolished the payment/collection of all levies in respect of these examinations by school heads/principals except Nigerian School Sports Federation and maintenance fees for which the sum of N130 is approved for JSS and SS1 to 11 per term and N440 for SS111 per term".

Now they are channeling their money into the right places. This is a good place to start. I hope they expand from here.

This is no doubt a good program by the Delta State Government. For those that had already left school and the government is now talking about refunding the money they paid, I think the benefit of paying for such pupils had already been defeated. WHY? The actual time the money was desperately needed by some parents, they could not get it and as a result some of their ward/child(ren) could had missed the exams and this is an avenue for some government officials to embezzle govt fund as there is no way that every parent will collect this money and it will be accounted to have been collected by this officials
