LEGISREPORTS NG – In a bid to ease traffic congestion around Agege and Iju areas of Lagos State, members of the state House of Assembly have called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to construct a flyover at Pen Cinema, which will connect Oba Ogunji Agunbiade and Iju Road.

This call followed a motion moved by the member representing Agege Constituency 2, Hon. Yinka Ogundimu, and seconded by the member representing Epe Constituency 1, Abiodun Tobun.

While speaking on the motion, Ogundimu explained that the traffic situation around the affected areas had negatively affected productive hours, health and economic activities of residents in the area.

He said: “The absence of a flyover in the area has created a lot of hardships and suffering for motorists, commuters and residents and this has negative socio-economic implications.

“Motorists and commuters who ply Agege Axis and Pen Cinema experience daily chaotic traffic jam leading to incessant accidents, traffic gridlock, loss of lives and productive hours.

“Unless an urgent action is taken by the state government to address the situation, the people would continue to suffer. The Agege-Ifako Model City Plan provided for a flyover at the cross road.”

According to the lawmaker, the bridge will not only reduce the sufferings of motorists and commuters in Agege but help those of Alimosho, Ikeja, Ifako-Ijaiye and Ogun State.

Contributing to the motion, Hon. Bisi Yusuf representing Alimosho Constituency 1, noted that “the fear of congestion in that area is the beginning of wisdom for motorists and commuters in the area.”

Yusuf explained that traffic situation in the area had not only affected the economic activities but also the security situation. “Because of the congestion, most of these hoodlums attack the people and rob them of their property. The construction of a flyover there is long overdue,” he said.

Hon. Tunde Braimoh representing Kosofe Constituency 2 compared the popular junction Pen Cinema with the Ojuelegba junction in Lagos and Mokola junction in Ibadan. He cited the construction of flyovers at these aforementioned junctions as a great relief to the traffic problems being experienced there overtime. He therefore urged the State Government to take cue and embark on the construction.

On his part, Hon. Sola Giwa representing Lagos Island Constituency 1, urged the government to consider the future plan in implementing the resolution. “We tend to only plan for the immediate need which is not good enough, without putting future explosion of population in that area into consideration. We should always consider the future in the development of our infrastructure,” Giwa said.

Hon. Segun Olulade, member representing Epe Constituency 2, who commended the prime mover of the motion, urged the government to also look into future. “We should always think ahead and plan ahead into the future, whatever it will do now should not be a palliative to total remedy putting the future in mind.”

Abiodun Tobun (Epe Constituency 1), who decried the stress and loss of man hours on that axis, said that the construction of that bridge would immortalise the government of Ambode. “If the bridge is constructed, people will be able to reach their destination so fast and so quick, stop the nefarious activities of the men of the underworld,” said Tobun

Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho (Mushin 1) said that there were about 10 housing estates in the area, “so it is very important the government constructed the bridge. The construction would not only enhance the socio-economic activities but also the health and security of commuters and motorists.”

She, however, urged Ambode to embark on the project to honour the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa who is representing the constituency.

Speaker Obasa in his ruling, said, “even if you pass through Pen Cinema, around 10pm and 11pm, there will still be traffic jam. The number of estates growing around Agege surpasses the infrastructure around the area. There is nothing we can do than do construct a fly over in the interests of all the people.

“This House resolves to call on the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode to, as a matter of urgency, direct the appropriate Ministries, Agencies or board of governments to commerce appropriate actions that will enable the government to embark on the construction of Fly Over across Pen Cinema connecting Oba Ogunji Agunbiade and Iju Road as part of the implementation of the Agege-Ifako Model City plan.”

After a voice vote, the Speaker passed the resolution and the Assembly adjourned plenary session to September 7, 2015 in order to embark on its annual recess.
