Following series of litigation after some officers of the Nigerian Army were sentenced to death over various offences, the Army has confirmed that it is reviewing many of the cases.
In a statement made available to the Nigeria Politics Online by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Army however stated that only genuine cases are being entertained in the review programme and not those of the officers who deserted their duty posts or were found guilty of collaborations.
“The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a correspondence making the rounds in some media regarding an administrative procedure to review some recent disciplinary cases in the Nigerian Army.
“For the avoidance of doubt it should be noted that the Nigerian Army is reviewing all recent disciplinary cases due to the wave of litigation and petitions by some aggrieved personnel.
“The public should not misconstrue the recent directive to mean total recall of dismissed and deserter soldiers.”
Over 70 officers of the Army had been sentenced to death over what the force called mutiny last year while several others have also been court marshaled for various offence.
There had been several pleas and litigation on why the Army must review the cases.
At the forefront of the cases is Lagos Lawyer, Femi Falana, who has intensified efforts at getting the embattled soldiers freed.
