Harry Kane can be one of the great strikers in world football... and can fulfill his promise at Tottenham, says Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham will on Tuesday face former golden boy Gareth Bale, who left to realise his lofty ambitions with one of Europe’s superpowers.
But ahead of their friendly with Real Madrid, Mauricio Pochettino says Harry Kane does not have to follow Bale’s lead to land silverware.
The Spurs boss believes his 22–year-old hotshot is one of the best strikers in the world. And unlike Bale, who moved to Real for £85.2million, Pochettino thinks Kane can fulfill his aspirations at Tottenham

‘He’s excited to start the season with us,’ said the Argentine of last year’s 31-goal sensation, who has interested Manchester United. ‘Any doubts about his commitment are gone. He is delighted to stay with Tottenham. He is a big supporter of the club. I think he is very happy and we are very happy he is with us.’
Kane, rated at £40m, is one of the Premier League’s hottest talents after his stunning breakthrough last season.

Pochettino believes the England international can deal with the hype and become one of the greatest strikers in the world.
‘He can manage this pressure,’ said Pochettino ahead of the Audi Cup clash with Real, managed by Rafa Benitez, at the Allianz Arena.

‘He is young but he is very mature. He is in a very good way to become one of the best strikers in the world. If you can do it in England and Europe, you are doing it in the best competitions in the world.’
Welsh winger Bale lifted the Champions League trophy in his first season at the Bernabeu, scoring in the final, but Pochettino believes Kane is part of a group that want to make history in north London.
‘I think that we have very ambitious players now, the younger ones in the group, like Harry,’ he said. ‘We need to keep this mentality. We try to build a very strong group for the next few years to try and achieve important things.

When Bale left in 2013, Tottenham used the cash to bring in seven players, four of whom have since left White Hart Lane. But Pochettino, who took over last summer, was reluctant to criticise those involved.
‘I never talk about what happened in the past,’ he said. ‘I wasn’t at the club. People took the decisions and sometimes good things happen and sometimes they don’t. It’s not a big problem. It’s always tough to manage the big club like Tottenham — with or without money.’
Spurs, who on Wednesday will play either Bayern Munich or AC Milan, then kick off their Barclays Premier League campaign at Manchester United on Saturday lunchtime.

Because of the short turnaround, Pochettino revealed they tried to have the game moved to Sunday but were unsuccessful. He said: ‘It was impossible for the Premier League. We know it was difficult to change because United play in midweek for qualification into the Champions League.’
Few have tipped Tottenham to improve from last season’s fifth place and qualify for Europe’s premier competition instead of the Europa League.
To do so they need to improve on a poor defensive record. Last season they conceded 53 goals — as many as relegated Burnley. Pochettino said: ‘We were one of the best teams with possession of the ball but we need to be more defensive and solid when we don’t have it. This is our challenge this season.
