1 I have done this a couple of times, but have stopped doing it. Before, I didn't care. Now, I feel some guilt. I try to be a good, law-abiding Nigerian these days. But more critically, the fear of accident from driving against the normal direction has made me more patient.

2, I agree with you. Being patient and orderly pay. Everyone benefits.

3-4N I agree with you.

I'm now a born-again road user.

Nigeria us weak when it comes to consistent enforcement of laws and allowable standards.

If a person is sure he's gonna get way with routine traffic violations, they will seek to continue it.

I've driven against traffic on two occasions and I felt so awkward and extremely selfish. I've stopped that primitive and selfish ever since.

If we must sanitise this madness, then the government must come put really hard and firm about it. People only obey enforced laws.
Exactly , you don't make laws and expect people to obey it when the arms of Government that was suppose uphold it aren't doing their Job.
You make laws in such a way that you'll have to go extra ordinary miles to break it and when you're caught the penalty should be applied religiously. In fact with technology these days traffic shouldn't be a problem but again we have leaders and policy makers that seem to think through their ass all the time.
That model I told you about would work perfectly on our roads and even reduce the number of rickety cars plying them and drivers that can't lead a normal life.

Once you break the rules , you pay heavily for it you'll not need a soothsayer to admonish you to behave next time.

Driving against traffic is a very common trend from Mangoro to Dopemu under bridge every evening(Mon-Fri). Many drivers wouldn't want to be in traffic gridlock for hours when they can drive against traffic and get to their destination in minutes.

Unfortunately, the police have turned this into everyday source of cash. They catch you, you pay and go. It's like paying toll every evening to some drivers.

If you were driving from Ikeja towards Iyana Ipaja and you live on the other side of the road at Mangoro or Cement bus stop, it then means you would have to endure then traffic hold up every evening from Mangoro to Dopemu/Akowonjo roundabout before turning towards Ikeja and getting to your side of cement/mangoro busstops to get home.

While iI'm not making a case for improper driving, if you can endure this kind of torture for a month, by the next month, the temptation to drive against traffic would grow more and more inside you.

Someone above mentioned countries where things work. I agree with you. In such countries too, there would be provisions for people driving from Ikeja towards iyana ipaja but who live on the other side of the road from Mangoro to Cement bus stops. This stretch of the road is almost 2km and you must climb Dopemu bridge before you can turn around to get home.

Believe me, driving home everyday in such circumstances will drive you nuts.

Am in PH, my problem with the drivers here is the abuse of road ie blowing one-way, blaring of siren, amber lights and full headlight (in broad day light even at night when dim is supposed to be used) unnecessarily. Causing discomfort and nuisance to ordinary motorists.

Only if a law can be enacted against this, i dont think these can be stopped in PH.

Committing a crime is just too easy and cheap in Nigeria!

I quite agree with you on enforcement of laws by the responsible agencies, although we need to consider that humans should use their conscience as a moral compass that should guide them. What if one in flouting traffic laws hits someone down, will he/she be able to live with the guilt? Some people's conscience are more stronger than others... My humble submission.

Till when those who claim to be above the law, like those that move with sirens, escorts, VIPs, etc( excluding fire service nd ambulance) start obeying traffic laws, then the situation will be better..

Do you know that apart from gridlocks resulting from bad spots on the road or police's N50 tolls, most gridlocks result from selfish decisions of people like you who are well dressed and are ON LONG TIES.

When sb wears a tie, is it the person you find on the tie or it is the tie you find on the person? How could you say sb is ON top of a tie that is actually on his neck?
.
That's how people like you say "Men on black" instead of Men in Black even though you knw there's an American movie titled Men in Black.Do Nigerians think Americans are less proficient in English than us?
.
It's so annoying when Nigerians turn English upside down.Really shameful.

At times I saved more than an hour by driving against the traffic. Infact, I saved fuel. In lag, you are condemned to drive against traffic once in a while
Were there times you wasted more than 2 hours because you drove against traffic?

smiley :DMy brother where are we rushing to? I almost got carried away by same notion but that day I wanted to know where the driver was rushing to. In less than a minute, he parked by the roadside joint and hailed his friends waiting for him to join them in relaxing after the day's work. I laughed over the folly, honestly. So please don't chase after them unless its a car race... wink

Shameful and embarrassing. I learnt my own lesson d very hard way, d first and last time i drove against traffic was in 2009, i did it successfully bt abt 15 minutes after i got on d ryt lane i had a minor crash bashing a car i drove without the owner's permission. The person i was carrying simply said 'if u were still at d back this would probably not have happened'. The other guy fixed d car, bt i didn't get to whr i was going, yet plenty salt upon injury.

It's so annoying, when you see some of these lunatics cum drivers endangering the lives of other road users.

I wish there're Mobil courts all around to try these offenders instantly. Jail the guilty with no option of fine, seize their driving licenses and subject them to psychiatric evaluation before even allowing them take a walk on our streets.

Well in case you've not noticed the recent changes...buses no longer take one way as they've been warned even bikes take the normal lane..I agree with you o, the govt should do something about that terrible hold up that keeps making a 5 minute journey 3 hours

These are my submissions at all times.

Impatience!

Most times when I drive outside Lagos, I see the way other road users look at me with dissatisfaction because of the way I transfer my Lagos road-rage aggression to their community.
