Notwithstanding the change in nomenclature, Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has been operating from the Office of the First Lady located inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, SUNDAY PUNCH can report authoritatively.

Ahead of the March 28 presidential election, Buhari, who was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, had promised that he would not have an office for the First Lady should he emerge victorious at the election.

“The Office of the First Lady is not in the constitution, so there’s no official role for them,” Buhari had said.

As the campaigns progressed however, Mrs. Buhari joined the APC team.

That made observers doubt whether the President would be able to walk his talk.

Since her husband’s assumption of office, Mrs. Buhari has dropped the title of “First Lady” used by her predecessors, including Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

She adopted the title of “Wife of the President.”

Investigations by our correspondent have, however, showed that apart from the nomenclature, nothing significant has changed.

Mrs. Buhari and her handlers operate from the First Lady’s office used by her predecessors, it was learnt.

The office is located beside the official residence of the President.

Her office, like it was under her predecessors, houses her staff members, including personal aides, security details and protocol officials, among others.

She has so far organised events similar to the ones that were not in short supply under her immediate predecessor, Mrs. Jonathan.

The first event organised by Mrs. Buhari was an elaborate “thank you dinner” she organised in honour of APC women and youths for supporting her husband’s election.

The President’s wife, during the recently concluded Ramadan, also broke her fast with some women leaders and the less privileged.

Recently, the Office of the Wife of the President, in conjunction with a United Kingdom-based private firm, organised a seminar on protocol, etiquette and security for wives of state governors.

At that event, the President’s wife charged the wives of the state governors to come up with laudable programmes to complement their husbands’ efforts.

At the conclusion of Ramadan, Mrs. Buhari also hosted children to an elaborate Sallah party.

All these events were held inside the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with glamour.

Apart from these, the President’s wife, represented by some individuals, had donated either cash or relief items to internally displaced persons and other groups in parts of the country.

Our correspondent also learnt that she is at the verge of initiating a pet project, a platform that will be used to meet specific needs.

That has also been the style of previous First Ladies.

The Director of Media in the Office of the Wife of the President, Zakari Yau Nadabo, confirmed to our correspondent on Thursday that arrangements were ongoing for a pet project for Mrs. Buhari.

Nadabo said the first step was to identify the area where the President’s wife is interested in making intervention.

He said, “It is not about initiating a pet project alone. The first step is to identify the area. The plan is already in the pipeline. Issues are just beginning to take shape.

“We do not want to rush. We want to take our time to do a careful analysis so that we can intervene in critical areas."

No big deal here. The press should let her be. Which office did they expect her to operate from before? What matters is that the activities of the office and her pet project will not be funded by government unlike what was obtainable during the regimes of past head of states.

Wife of the President performs nominal and ceremonial roles in other countries of the world. What's repugnant like we had in the last administration is budgetary allocation to an office not recognized by law. Are we going to lock her up in her bedroom because her husband won an election?

When hypocrites are in control, nothing surprises persons like me.

First it was to seek foreign help in fighting terrorism, an act they previously condemned and now this.

Next will be calling boko boys our brothers just like Gej did which they saw as weakness on his part. I mean, what does negotiating and granting amnesty to terrorists mean if not calling them your brothers.

So what? Every wife of a president/governor has a way in which she assists her husband. Or u expecting her to carry out her duties from her bedroom? Every wife has a duty to complement the role of her husband. What PMB was against and which I'm convinced will never be allowed to happen during his administration is a situation where the first lady takes on the role of a de facto vice president, where money is budgeted for a office not recognized by the constitution and where an unelected person occupying a non constitutionally recognized office will publicly be chastising elected governors and other public officials. If Buhari doesn't allow his wife assist him(particularly in humanitarian activities) ya'll wailers will still say he's a Islamic fundamentalist who's still in d stone age.

Don't tell me you can't differentiate between the "official" title of "First Lady" which the president promised not to allow to function such that Nigeria money is used to fund it AND Aisha operating her pet projects as the wife of the president from same office Mama Piss used.

Aisha has said it severally that she will have pet projects to be funded by NGO's and other corporate bodies. Do you then expect her to come use your office or house?

This is the crux of the matter. A situation where Pepe practically became the president while Jona was made redundant and helpless was what Nigeria condemned. After all, she was not the first person to be called "First Lady".

Who doesn't love power? Whatever name she decides to use isn't of much concern to me for as long as she doesn't turn to another Madam Pieces who controlled Governors and party members.

She shouldn't abuse the privileges of the being the President's wife like Dame Jonathan did.

I hope she dose not take over her ingrish.

This woman has absolute freedom to use her privilege as wife of president to launch herself into public life, as long as None of that is funded by the presidency... She can launch a book, organize public fund raising with friends for charity, attend workshops and inspire young people etc. she gets her usual security and staff accorded to members of the first family, that's it. Who says the wife of president should go into oblivion because she married the president?

Asides her loud stance on issues, what did Madam Patience do differently?

Has she not always funded pet projects and done stuff without using PEJ's office?

The difference apart from her loud mouth is that her projects were officially budgeted for in our national budget. I will only criticize Aisha and PMB on this when there is a proof that her work/projects is provided for in our budget.

I think this might open an inroad to the growth of corruption. He who seeks power avidly is never to be trusted. PMB is gradually revealing himself as an untrustworthy man, a man who can't stand by his promise. I thought GEJ was weak.
