Governor fingered in alleged plot to kill 200 AC members 24/3/2009

From Odunayo Ogunmola, Ado-Ekiti

A South-West governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been fingered in an alleged plot to kill some 200 Action Congress (AC) members in the April 25 governorship election rerun in Ekiti State.

The plot, according to a socio-political pressure group, the Positive Force, was allegedly hatched at a meeting in Ibadan where strategies on how to rig the rerun were discussed.

In a statement in Ado-Ekiti given to reporters yesterday by its Co-ordinator, Mr. Bola Ogundana, the Positive Force alleged that National Assembly members from the state had resolved to make riot policemen and other security agents attached to them available for rigging.

The group said the federal legislators allegedly resolved to carry out the act following the denial by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that soldiers would be drafted to polling centres to monitor the election.

It said meetings were also held in Ijero-Ekiti, Iyin-Ekiti, and Lagos on how the election would be disrupted.

The group quoted the governor as saying "by the time they kill 200 AC members on the election day, they would succumb."

The Positive Force alleged that at a meeting at the home of a retired military chief, who is a PDP member, it was resolved that guns and thugs would be deployed in the state for the rerun in a bid to ensure PDP's victory.

"A former commissioner was boasting that they had concluded arrangements at a meeting held in Lagos at the weekend to make use of riot police, regular police, the army and some fake policemen to scare away voters to enable them rig Oni back to power and, if not possible, the result would be announced in Abuja," the statement said.

It also raised the alarm that there are plans to muddle up the voters’ register so that registered voters would not find their names in the register.

A top INEC official was also alleged to be making contacts with the PDP national leadership to bring compromised staff to the state to rig the election in favour of the party.

The Positive Force condemned the alleged release of a house belonging to a former commissioner to ex-Governor Segun Oni.

The statement condemned the alleged refusal of the police to transfer the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ola, despite calls for his transfer.

It urged President Umaru Yar'Adua to redeploy Ola "to prevent impending breakdown of law and order in the state."

It also urged the President to check his party members "who are desperate to win the state governorship rerun."

PDP Director of Communications and Strategy, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, debunked all the allegations.

He described as laughable the allegation that a South-West governor was involved the plot to kill at least 200 AC members in Ekiti, saying the allegation is a figment of the imagination of its sponsors.

He said the PDP would never resort to crude and underhand methods in its bid to win the rerun.
