Find Out Which Geo Political Zone Got The Most Loans From Zenith Bank

The table below comes from the financials of Zenith Bank which has just released its HALF Year 2015 results. What struck us as odd at Nairametrics was the narrow geographic concentration of Zenith Banks loan book.

Fig 1: Zenith Bank geographic spread of loans

zenith1

Basically of the N1.796 trillion of loans and advances to Nigerian customers by Zenith Bank for the period, N1.764 trillion or 98.2 percent of the total were extended to businesses and individuals in the South West of the country, which is dominated by Lagos the commercial capital.

Zenith Bank even extended more loans to customers in the rest of Africa region of its operations (N66.9 billion), and outside Africa (N77.7 billion), than in the 5 other geographic regions that make up Nigeria combined.

Apart from the risk that this level of extreme concentration exposes the bank to, it would be nice to also see the geographic concentration of deposits into the bank, which was not provided.

We believe that Nigerians in other regions (SS, SE,NE,NC and NW), who may be contributing a significant amount of Zenith Banks deposits may not take too kindly to not having an opportunity to access loans from the bank, simply as a result of where they reside.

There is simply nothing these Eastern wailers will not wail about!
Oya issue ultimatum to Zenith bank to correct the anomaly
How many of your traders that dominates your region can provide a simple 5 year business plan that is part of the requirement to process loan.
What this report simply shows is that you are not into big time businesses in that part of Nigeria.

OP your title is misleading. Zenith Bank does not operate only in the south of Nigeria.

The truth is that Zenith Bank is a private institution and reserves the right to approve or reject loan applications. Unity Bank (formerly Bank of the North) also prioritises the northern region in its operations. Such decisions are usually strategic and are primed for competitive advantage.

Good point. Most traders usually source their loans from Micro-finance banks.

We thank Bhuddha, Obatala & Zeus that Peter Olisamedua Amangbo is the current CEO of Zenith Bank and Jim Ovia is the Chairman /Founder/Largest Stake Holder in Zenith Bank, and both of them are not from the South West.

Zenith Bank, like many other Nigerian Banks, has right to invest whenever they deemed fit and safe. There is no point getting sentimental about where investment should be made or located.

This is a private business organization driven by profit not altruism. Zenith Bank is not the Federal Government that makes decision base on public and political interest; but unfortunately, Zenith Bank is largely known as a Banking Haven of Fraudsters.

Do not ask me how I know.
