It is no longer news that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which was established in 2003 by President Olusegun Obasanjo to fight corruption among others was being used by the same administration as a political weapon and an instrument of witch-hunt of innocent individuals that they were at crossroads with the self-serving third-term bid of the Owu-born General.Among those that fell victim ofthe political vendetta was Dr. Orji Kalu, a renowned business mogul of international repute and founder of a leading worldwide conglomerate, Slok Group. When the eminent business figure decided in early 90s to venture into politics, little did he know that he was not only entering a naturally controversial field filled with gossips, cheap blackmail, wickedness, desperation, barbarism among others but also where he will rubbish his hard earned glory and accomplishments in the world of business and philanthropy. However, despite all the barbaric efforts of Obasanjo to pull the strong- willed and courageous Kalu down, the masses who are not only familiar with the former governor’s humanitarian gestures but also beneficiaries of his large-heart and benevolence still hold the entrepreneur in high esteem. If Kalu had known that his passion to serve his people will lead to unsubstantiated allegations of corruption against his person as championed by the EFCC on the orders of the then President Obasanjo, he would have maintained the status quo, as he was already impacting lives and contributing positively to the society through his robust philanthropic activities.

The Abia State-born business mogul did not limit his commitment to a fair society by supporting only the less privileged but he has also demonstrated this by authoring books, articles and journals towards the enthronement of democracy and a just society.

It is worth noting that having being successful in these selfless initiatives, he would have continued to build his giant strides in the business sector which would have put in him in a far better level other than allowing the likes of Obasanjo victimize him in the face of politics. At least, now, Slok Airline, Hallmark and Southgate banks (subsidiaries of Slok group) are no more and thousands of Nigerians and expatriates lost their jobs and means of livelihood because of the “Order from the Above”. To cut the long story short, we cannot turn back the clock, in essence, today the former governor is referred to as a businessman- cum- politician.

For the records and in view of the call in some quarters for the EFCC to speed up the case of corrupt allegations against the former governor, it is imperative to let the world know what led to Kalu’s ordeal in the hands of the anti graft agency. Kalu’s conviction against the third term and unbecoming and unpatriotic agenda of Obasanjo led to his arrest years back by the EFCC on the instruction of “Baba Iyabo”. His encounter with the EFCC is not unconnected to a strong-worded and nationalistic letter written by the former to the latter. In the said letter dated 25th September, 2005, the business mogul challenged Obasanjo on national issues and the latter never responded nor gave explanations.

Obasanjo can never see anything good in others. He is fond of humiliating, rubbishing and bad-mouthing people’s accomplishments as he has nothing to celebrate but the monumental fraud that characterized his regime while he held sway as President especially the unaccounted billions of naira spent on the power sector. The Ota farmer has not only set the pace of Nigeria’s development backwards but has also become a laughing stock even among his immediate family members.

This was one of those big frogs OBJ could not swallow during his eight years. The hard truths in that letter are

EFCC and ICPC are duplications
The anti corruption began well but ended as a war against PDP or OBJ opponents.

Every good leader must keep closely those who tell them the truth and not sycophants
