President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded plans to recover all government property still in possession of government officials who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The government assets including vehicles, buildings, generator sets and others were said to still be in the possession of the former government officials weeks after they left office.

Irked by the development, Buhari was said to have set up a committee made up of civil servants and security agencies to identify and recover the unreturned public assets from the former political appointees.

The development is in continuation of ongoing efforts of the President to reclaim as much of Nigeria’s stolen resources as possible.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the development to journalists on Sunday.

He said, “That is precisely the case. Even here at the Presidential Villa, there are cars and other property belonging to the government which are yet to be returned.

“The property belong to the Nigerian people. We are not trying to humiliate anyone by asking them to return their cars or houses.”

The presidential spokesman however did not disclose the identities of former government officials said to be still in possession of government property.

But he expressed the conviction that the committee set up by the President would recover all the government assets.

When asked whether the state and local governments were facing similar challenges with retrieving government property from their predecessors, Shehu said he was not in a position to confirm or deny this.

He added, however, that he would not be surprised if that was the case, as this attitude of holding on to government property even after leaving office must be a natural outcome of the culture of impunity that has prevailed in Nigeria over the past years of the Peoples Democratic Party’s rule.

“But change has come. That is why we have to do things differently now. Imagine how much Nigeria will save by retrieving and re-using these government properties instead of purchasing new ones for new government officials,” he said.

To most of these looters, this is what they believe. If only they understand that it is better to surrender than go about the process the hard way.

The President has concluded plans, I pray we stop hearing "Buhari to probe Jonathan's Aides, Ministers" afterwards.

While I know and believe that corruption is a cankerworm eating up Nigerias' socio-economic progress, however, I do think buhari for that matter is actually NOT ready to fight corruption and nail it, if he truly is; then his body language is not showing it... All that his body language is showing is INEPTITUDE.

To effectively fight corruption in Nigeria (please notice the use of the word 'effectively'), a president needs 'tact' more than 'noise', but in buhari's case his approach has been 'noise' more than 'tact'. Ordinarily, as a general truism, 'when you fight corruption it fights back' that is why the use and need for tact is paramount.

I believe all these corruption songs and choruses were composed to hide buhari's incompetence and uncivilty, I still believe that corruption should be fought and defeated, albeit not with buhari's strategy. An intelligent and effective leader will fight corruption through Laws, Technology, Welfare, and Good governance. There so many reasons why I believe buhari's macabre dance will not yield any result - instead Nigeria will be worse of by it. If buhari decides today to go after Jonathan, first he will have to engage the services of forensic auditors and paying those people 'no be beans', in this case (Nigeria) will be loosing money. Then the forensic auditors will go into investigation, after the investigation they will submit their report. The government now seeks the services of lawyers who will help them prosecute the cases and pay them heavily. So even before the case goes to court the country has lost money on two counts, i.e. on Auditors and Lawyers.

Now, while the case is in court you leave the aftermath - which by the way is the ultimate crest point at the mercy of judges. To refresh our memory a bit, when obasanjo finished his term in 2007, Ribadu the then EFCC chairman hurled over thirty govs to court, and what was the result of the prosecution after over eight years; not even one conviction has been secured, and the govs keep walking free. Infact most of them are now in the senate.

What any Intelligent leader (which unfortunately buhari is not even close) would do in fighting corruption is to say - from now going forward this and that are the ways we have to run things in in Nigeria, then he begins to implement strategies which may include: (1) persuade the national assembly to create a criminal code of conduct and a special court for corruption within three months of taking over power and increase the punishment attendant to corrupt cases. (2) Make the criminal courts independent and place their funding on the first line charge of the federation acct. (3) Ask the auditor general of the federation to make sure that all - I mean ALL the accounts of the MDA's in Nigeria are being audited every year. (4) Going Forward, every Minister must declare his/her assets publicly before taking allegiance/service oats. (5) Setup a monitoring agency that reports to the president, which monitors all the expenditures of MDA's in Nigeria. (6) Move all salaries and wages of all the MDA's to the IPPIS, and strengthen the IPPIS. (7) Going forward, every contract awarded (upwards of #1 million) by any MDA must pass through a centralized tenders board - payments shall only be authorized through CBN as a clearing agent, i.e. after official verification of work done.

8. Fast track the Implementation of the cashless society so that both the EFCC and ICPC can monitor all financial transaction. (9) Increase the standard of living of every Nigerian so that the appetite for corruption will be reduced. (10) Strengthen and rigorously implement the FOI.

These are the kind of strategies you need to fight corruption and not to engage in this nonsensical and sycophantic sentimentalism of 'probes'. Just take look at the kind of heat and division the 'probe' noise is generating in a fragile country like Nigeria, in which case is stretching the ropes of ethnic unity and almost at the point of breaking it, all because the president is a pathetic dolt.

PDP will soon call this witch hunting and victimization. Watch this space. Olisa Metuh will soon wail about it. Peace committee will visit Buhari about it, Fayose will wail about it and Barcanista will write a article on it.
