Are you going to have a high slope ceiling or the regular low flat ceiling?

I'm facing this quagmire. Is the cost difference minimal?

Thanks.

I will have a flow flat ceiling since the truss configuration will have a flat suffice ( tie beam lie horizontal. The rafter will make a 7 degree angle to the horizontal (tie beam).

Like this sketch below

Okay.

Similar to what my Architect drew for my garage apartment. I see some on Houzz that has a high slope ceiling but I guess that may be a little bit more complicated to carry out.

Thanks for sharing Sir.

Thanks for the 'heads-up' Sir.

Below are pics of PVC ceiling with POP cornice at the edge of the wall.

POP cornice is calculated in metres and price ranges from N1,000 - N1,300 per meter. And POP pre-cast ceiling ranges from N2,600 - N3,500 per sqm. Volume, location and designs a deciding factor.

Hajji Mufutau & Dominionng, Thanks for the info.

I'm not a book person per see so I can't guide you on schools and programs.

But if you can get an apprenticeship with a builder here for 6 months, you'll go back home and make a killing because you can advertise to people like me and assure us to use your US building experience to churn out US quality type of work.

Egun "just give me straight lines and plumb floors" Mogaji

Good luck.

Okay Egun,I appreciate.one more question, looking at that apprenticeship program in us, do you have a good or more desired building trade apprentice course in mind? it seems us embassy in Nigeria rarely issue visa to such applicant. you understand what I mean don't you?

Well, I in fact know of someone coming over for farming training. The embassy does gives visa if the consular believes the narrative.

Look at someone like Spyder and others for example, family man with wife and kids, established track record as a builder and approaches the embassy for visa to attend a specific training on eco building or some such new age technology - you will hardly find a consular that will deny him a visa.

I don't know of a specific training course but I will do a search for you. The family friend that I know that did this simply brought over his Nigerian builder and had him "train" under the crew that was building one of his hospitals in the US.

Don't be shy to ask builders on here directly too as they may just have that info from their building associations.

Good luck.

Thanks my brother, I will surely ask him, I just wanted to have an idea of what to expect. As per the other variables, raised in your response; 1. He lives and works in abuja. 2. The job was done part time as he was handling 2 other jobs while executing mine. 3. The job lasted approximately one year. 4. Minus the cost of land and building approval, the total cost was about 8m. In the light of the aforementioned , what do think constitute a 'fair' price to both parties. Thank you.

probably a minimum of about 5 percent of 8m

@ Brokensword, Americans usually build their homes mostly with treated woods, sheetrocks, plug&play concrete walls and those small red bricks.Have not seen too many homes constructed with the 6" or 9" blocks o. Just something to keep in mind too.

Have you considered South Africa for this training? Major reason is cos they use building materials that can work in Nigeria...

My 2 cents..

haaaaa Ogami 3strike!baba all my quest for this training centers around US,someone very closed mentioned about SA but I waved it off due to the fact America is more advance in terms of building maintenance, concreting, wall finishing, interior design et all., I appreciate your input but US remain my first port of call,if you ve an insight towards what I'm searching I do appreciate. a one year/six month program in any accredited institution in US for a building technologist, I'm working/planning to bring a new dimension towards Nigerian building industry, thanks once more.

What is the best material to patch leaking spots on the roof before POP? Bearing in mind that the roof top can no longer be climbed in other not to destroy the Metcopo steptile roofing sheets. Flash band is said to drop when the roof is very hot cos it's been placed under the roof. Some have suggested silicon gum and other stuffs. Pls experts in the house over to you. Thanks in advance

I know nothing about building like Mr egun tho who seems to be very resourceful and have answers for everything undecided ... But lets be real for once here. Its like you are advising the young man to go to yankee to study law and not UK when his goal is to later come to naija to practice. Everyone knows UK is beta.

@Brokensword this might not be the kind of suggestion you expect to read from me. But ask yourself these questions?

1.When you come back from your training oversea what do you plan to build with? Block or wood like the Americans?

2. If its wood and sheetrocks like yankee folks you want to train with....Are you planning to ship in all these quality building materials with current exchange rate?

3. If you still plan to build with wood...think about our climate in naija and also dont forget the termites too.

Dont forget to always begin with the end in mind....

If you just want to go to yankee to explore ....just say so and People will be able to advise u beta.

House, this is a perfect example of how shyte starts and then you'll say Egun don come again with him wahala.

Must I have the same opinion with everyone?

Guy asked a question, I answered based on what I know. I don't know South Africa, I don't care about South Africa. I care about US building styles and I intend to encourage people about US building styles.

They also build with concrete blocks in the US and the most important thing missing in most Nigerian built homes is the quality of the finishing regardless of the building style.

Leaving shyte alone, going to go and carve Pacific Coast Highway on my bike, it's a nice day here in SoCal grin

You are so wrong 3strikes on this one. What you dont know is that Nigerians are taking all these Mexicans from the US to Nigeria to build houses now. Wood house also have a frame and everything is not wood. Those guys can build with concrete too.

You need to go to those high class estates to see who is behind them. I know property developers in Dallas and Houston that bring some artisans like framers in to build for them in Nigeria.

To buttress my point 3strike, what climate is harsh in Nigeria? Do they experience hurricane, Tornadoes, heavy snow with weight on the roof, earth quake like in Japan. Also, termites are everywhere. You need to be open minded.

I stand b to be corrected anytime cos am here to learn folks. Bro Am in Texas at the moment and I know how the houses here are being built...we dont need to go into much details here but what we know is that 80% of materials used is wood /sheetrocks period. The Stones and bricks are only use externally and not for the pillars or partitioning within.

Now I understand that mexicans do build houses like us in naija. So if you or the OP is talking about going to learn from Mexicans, then thats a diff conversation entirely.
Like I said am here to learn. I really dont know much about building. So please lets have a constructive chat.

Btw: almost everything is possible when you have the money. Which brings us back to my previous quote" always begin with the end in mind.
Who are your customers? Will they be able to afford the cost that comes with building like the Mexican American?

If you ve think it through then I want to use this forum to wish you all the best in all your endeavors.

Regards.

When I say Mexicans, I meant the Mexicans in the American building industry not from Mexico. You also know they dominate the industry because a Nigga grin is not ready to do such work lol. Also bear in mind they know how to build with both concrete and wood (Framers).I know your state and I know how houses are built there.

Even Dominonng on Nairaland is using sheetrock. All those are not new in Nigeria. I am just pointing out.
