The fatal fate of an ACE graduand. For many,
deciding on an institution to shape the future is a
test on its own, you compare your ambitions to the
tens of schools that can help achieve a qualitative
scholarly experience. In essence, for most
students, deciding to attend Adeyemi College of
Education (ACE), the foremost and unarguably best
college of education in the country is pride and
that its degree program is awarded by Obafemi
Awolowo University (OAU) via an affiliation is icing
on top.In February 2010, hundreds of freshmen
converge with excitement for orientation to begin a
4-year journey to obtaining a degree. Our course
work and tests are vetted and moderated by our
parent institution, OAU making sure they are up to
par of their standard. In fact, everything regarding
our degree program has to be approved by our
parent institution. We were a sister school to a
respected and reputable institution in the country
and we couldn’t be more proud.Every student had
one goal: becoming a graduate. For most, it goes
on to securing a dream job, advance in our
academic pursuits, starting a family, contributing
to the advancement of education and the society at
large. And like most tertiary institutions in the
country, we’ve had a few setbacks in form of
strikes, some lasting more than a semester but
we’ve persevered to make ourselves, our parents
and guardians, and our school proud.Last year, in
August 2014, we wrote our final paper with high
hopes, ready to continue on a laid out plan;
undertake the next phase of our lives. To begin, we
have to serve our great Nation in the Youth Corp
as directed by the Federal Government by decree
No. 24 of 22nd May, 1973. With the hope that we
get to honour the age-old tradition of serving,
imbibing the spirit of self-reliance and carry out
the objectives of the program, we waited. For a year
now, we have heard one excuse after another, from
delay in processing our results to postponement
due to elections. Putting a stop to our plans; we
cannot be employed, we cannot advance our
education, and our parents who by now expect
more can’t all because we don’t have a National
Youth Service Corp (NYSC) certificate. Our
colleagues from other institutions and from our
parent institution who graduated much later than
we did have been mobilized for the program. The
onus is on OAU to mobilize us for the program but
is seems to us we are being handled as second
fiddle.A week ago, we were informed by the
Students’ Affairs Department of ACE that our
names were being sent to OAU for mobilization
and asked to attend a conference in school where
Mr Andy Obaro, a representative from NYSC, Abuja
spoke about the aims and objectives of the
program. We were excited, rejuvenated, and started
making new plans, preparing for service. It was to
our utter dismay when we learnt a day later that
we would have to wait again till next year. The
news was disconcerting and has shattered any
modicum of hope we might have had. We do not
understand this decision, the registration for the
program closes Wednesday, September 2nd 2015
and the institution still has time to forward the
name of its graduating students as promised. The
school has announced about 200 students who
graduated in the 2012/2013 Harmattan semester
and have even waited longer have been mobilized.
This rigmarole has not fostered trust putting us in
doubt about our future and that of the new
graduates who wrote their final exams this
year. The College since being promoted to
university status by the previous administration
and that decision being rescinded by the new
administration has left the school without proper
administration. Professor Olukoya Ogen recently
reinstated as Provost of the College has been
contacted and has promised to take immediate
action. We are concerned for our wellbeing if we’d
have to wait for what could be another couple of
months without a job, dependent on our pressed
relatives in this economy. We implore the
administration of OAU to address this issue
expediently and allow us join our colleagues in the
2015 NYSC Batch B mobilization to deter further
setback in our life and academics. We also implore
the general public to come to our aid.

This is some serious issue here. I can relate to a few points up there.

I recall an interview invitation by an organization, after all things have been observed, it came to discussing salary that was when I received the shocker of my life.

There were no doubts about my qualification and credentials tendered, yet I was to receive a meagre pay. Why? This was due to the singular reason that I am yet to serve. Imagine !!!

There were some other things that played out but I want to stop here.

Just as most employers do not give a hoot about their employees (welfare and the likes), also the people heading universities and those higher up in the educational sector do not give a hoot about students (lives nor career).

The situation in our country is gross.
I hope God will shed some light on our pathetic existence, soon.

This is so heartbreaking sad

I wonder why they keep calling us leaders of tomorrow when it's obvious they never fail to do whatever it takes to make sure we don't move forward.

I feel like running to my grandma to ask her if she has got any 'AFOSE' but God knows best.

Are of the left, every cloud has it's own silver lining... The best is yet to come.

Can you guys get yourself together to stage a protest?
Your voices really need to be heard in unison.

I share the op and writer displeasure. This is real and it's not only affecting ACE but even the OAU students. According to the news I heard the Senate sat last week Tuesday now the question is what is stopping the school management from sending those names to nysc?

thanks for your words, I'm prepared for the worst but all the same there's some hope for us.
we protested peacefully yesterday to the extent that we locked the school main gate. no entry no exit. until the college provost attend to us.
he promised to travel down to nysc abuja office today. in the hope that we can still go with nysc supplementary list. #baseonbelive #B15. he will give us feedback tomorrow Wednesday. shame on OAU Oba Adaniduro University
