Drug deaths hit record levels in England and Wales with heroin and legal highs among the killers


Figures say 3,346 people were fatally poisoned last year after taking substances ranging from cocaine to antidepressant

The number of people killed by drug poisoning in England and Wales hit a record 3,346 last year, a report reveals.

Cocaine-related deaths rose to 247 from 169 a year earlier and an increase in purity was cited as a factor.

There were also 517 fatalities involving antidepressants, the most since 1999. People aged 40 to 69 made up the bulk of the rise.
