Good morning ladies and gentlemen.
The last aspect of Integration concerning JAMB/POST JAMB.
INTEGRALS OF THE FORM [size=40]$[/size]f'(x)/f(x) dx.
Just like the last class, can I strike out? Can I manipulate to strike out?


Example 1: Evaluate [size=40]$[/size](2x + 3)/(x2 + 3x - 5) dx.
Solution:
[size=40]$[/size](2x + 3)/(x2 + 3x - 5) dx
just like product, we can strike out the numerator by differentiating the denominator
let u = x2 + 3x - 5
du/dx = 2x + 3
dx = du/(2x + 3)
substituting back
[size=40]$[/size]{(2x + 3)/u} {(du/(2x + 3)}
= [size=40]$[/size]1/u du
this is a standard integral right? Good, the standard is

Example 2: Evaluate [size=40]$[/size](4x - cool / (x2 - 4x + 5) dx.
Solution:
[size=40]$[/size](4x - cool / (x2 - 4x + 5) dx
what do you notice? Very good, manipulation can work.
Let u = fill in the gap
dx = fill in the gap
[size=40]$[/size](4x - cool/u (fill in the gap)
= 2 1n(x2 - 4x + 5) + c


Example 3: Evaluate [size=40]$[/size]cosx/sinx dx.
Solution:
[size=40]$[/size]cosx/sinx dx
allow me to call this a straight forward method i.e the differentiation of the denominator yields the numerator.
Whenever you notice that the differentiation of the denom yield the numen, solve this way
[size=40]$[/size]cosx/sinx dx
= 1nsinx + c.
Same as example 1 above.


Example 4: Evaluate [size=40]$[/size](x - 3)/(x2 - 6x + 2) dx.
Solution:
[size=40]$[/size](x - 3)/(x2 - 6x + 2) dx
using direct method, but we need to manipulate the numerator by 2 (which is known from differentiation), but integration is the reverse process of differention (we will settled for the inverse of 2 which is 1/2)
1/2 1n(x2 - 6x + 2) + c.
Try it with example 2.

Ans: 14/3
2. No 42, 1997
if y = x(x4 + x2 + 1) cal [size=40]$[/size]1-1y dx.
Ans: 0.
Hint: multiply out and integrate in turn.
3. No 40, 1998
[size=40]$[/size]pi2(sec2x - tan2x) dx.
Ans: pi - 2.
Hint: tan2x + 1 = sec2x
4. No 38, 1999
evaluate [size=40]$[/size]1-2(x - 1)2 dx.
Ans: 9
5. No 37, 1999
evaluate [size=40]$[/size]pi/40(sinx - cosx) dx.
Ans: -1 - root2
Hint: trig of pi is 180 (just as before), but pi is 22/7.

The binary operation * is defined by x * y= xy - y - x for all real values of x and y. If x * 3= 2 * x, find the value of x.

Well done bro. I wouldn't advice any jambite to use this method though because of the time constraint. Instead, I'll enjoin them to use the trial by error method, i.e. try each of the options in equation 2 as that wouldn't take more than a few seconds and if peradventure, more than one of the options work with equation 2, screen them out with the equation 1.

matrices and determinants is very easy, but I don't think it can be properly explained with TEXTS on this forum because of its format. It would be best if you go through the topic in your textbook, then post questions; afterwards, answers to them may be posted via photo uploads.
