Oh yeah, you read the topic right.

There are actually some places in the world where it is against the law for you to die. The places range from specific buildings to whole regions and states. There exists a variety of reasons for these laws ranging from lack of land for cemetery expansions to Religious reasons.

The earliest recorded law like this was in the 5th Century BC in the Greek city of Delos where dying was prohibited on religious reasons. But till date, some places still exist in that manner.

As recent as 2005, the Brazilian city of Biritiba Mirim was faced with an attempt to make dying illegal. This was contained in a public bill by the mayor which stated that the law was necessary because the inhabitants of Biritiba Mirim do not take proper care of themselves. However, It is yet to be passed into law since then.

In France, the mayor of Le Levandou passed the law in 2000 in a bid to counter a law that stopped the expansion of the cemetery. In 2007, Cugnaux also followed suit and in 2008, Sarpourenx also did same all for similar reasons.

In Japan; The island of Itsukushima is considered a sacred location in Shinto belief, and is the site of the Itsukushima Shrine, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 1878, Death and Births have been forbidden on the island.

In Spain, Death has been prohibited in the Andalucian town of Lanjarón. The village, with 4,000 inhabitants, is to remain under this law until the government buys land for a new cemetery.

Hilarious you would agree
