Class for wwb-developers and their Clients

1. The domain name

This is the part of a network address that identifies it as belonging to a particular domain. Grammer aside, its just the URL of the website or link to it.

Rules Based on experience

Seriously had issues with my clients from the very start.
The domain name is the first most important aspect.
There are up to a million websites in every category. Almost all cool names have been taken or packed.
So you have to take some time to think before you decide.

(A) Make it as short as possible
Typing isn't fun, we just want to get there as fast
Imagine if Facebook.com was facebooksocialnetwork.com
It will be so annoying to type, no body has that time. And even if you bookmark it.
Who ever goes through his bookmark?
Go for something short and easy to memorise.
A maximum of 9 characters will be ok

Mark had to make Facebook.com short to fb.com 2 characters and OK. Because he recognises this as important.

The domain name mustn't carry everything
Jumia.com didn't go for jumiashop.com
why?

But you will have problems choosing a name for churches and organisations.
They want it to carry their whole church name or
The organisation name in full
No matter how you persuade them, your clients won't agree.

But you must understand the customer's need doesn't come first. Its actually yours. Only if you know what you are doing.
They don't know what they need, but you. And after the project they will still be the one to complain its too long.

The way out is using RECOGNISED acronyms.
Nafdac.com inec.com rccg.com

(B) Stick to the .com always

.com is popular and will always come to mind first, if someone wants to find your website.
If you choose .net or others, no matter how many hits you get, the .com will always look like the real deal.
If jumia chose jumia.net. I will be so smart to buy the .com as soon as I can.
Reason because, as the website becomes
popular the .com worth increases.
And can be sold for enough cash. Hehehhe

But if you decide to buy a .net, .org, etc
make sure you include the .com. Buy it and save it.

Understand this is very important

University of Benin had this issue back then.
They got a uniben.edu and forgot to secure the .com
Someone bought it and cloned their website from beginning to finish.
People did online clearance on this fake website, paid fees and more.

And on the day of the manual clearance, their records were no where to be found. How tragic.

Warning to web developers,
Don't just jump into any project you get. Think first.
Your client might not know anything about web design or hacking.
If this happens to any of your projects. They will think its you.
This will hurt your reputation and credibility or even take you to jail.
Someone must be blamed. Its who they can see that they will accuse.

(C) Not similar to known websites

Am guilty of this.
When I set up my own personal website, I was still a novice.
www.apeledesigns.com
The characters exceeds 9, too long.

And a www.apeledesign.com already exist.
And shocking, the guy offers the same service.
I didn't know, I didn't even check.
Now you will understand am not all genius. I am writing this based on previous experience and research.

What if my clients dont get the spelling well. They will land on an ugly website believing its mine. And say this man doesn't even have a good one, how can he make one for me. Mtcheew

Or you design a website for shell oil company and it lands on snail shell company.

Up till today, I tell my clients to add s oh. Everytime.

This really pushed me to learn seo up to the extent that I was able to beat apeledesign in search results. Placing mine apeledesigns, pages before his.
But all this would have been avoided from the very beginning. Don't you think?

(D) Don't use special characters

Special character are "'*=\@#£%&-+()?!;:'~|•√π÷׶∆€¥$¢^°={}\©®™℅[]¡ and it likes

Nobody has time to hold shift on his keyboard for you. In fact some websites use characters I can't find on my keyboard.
Its a should be simple and okay.
Don't use hyphens to separate text.
Just add them up like that.
