Around 70 firefighters are battling the blaze at the Baitful Futuh Mosque in London road, Morden. London Fire Brigade said about 50 per cent of the building’s ground floor was in flames and fire had also broke out on the first floor and the roof. The London Ambulance service confirmed one patient had been taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation. There are no other casualties at known at this time. The mosque is the biggest in Europe, with ten fire engines and two ambulances attending the scene. Station Manager Philip Morton who is at the scene said: ‘This is a large fire and our crews are working hard to minimise fire spread to other parts of the mosque.’ He added: ‘We are working closely with the local community to ensure our damage control operations take full regard of the religious significance of the building’s contents. ‘There is also a lot of traffic congestion near the incident so we would advise people to avoid the area if possible.’ National Rail have postponed their service to Morden South and the LFB also advised motorists to avoid the area.
